Question to modelers about mirrored objects...
« on: September 29, 2003, 12:28:43 pm »
Hi people, IŽm having problems converting my ships to .MOD format. The thing is that after converting it, the parts of the ship that were mirrored from another look like transparents. I mean, the facing polygons are transparents. Like if you were able to see only the internal face of the model.
I donŽt see this in MAX.

Thanks in advance,

Mariano

Edited: This doesnŽt happend if I check the base bones box in the mirror dialog. But in this way, I cannot use the model because it looks inside out.

The SFC model creation manual is pretty clear on the topic of mirroring, in that (especially in SFC3), the engine has difficulties with it. In SFC2, I imagine the problem is that Max maintains some oddball extra data when you mirror something, and this prevents proper exporting in most formats. I suggest you selected the mirrored side and click on the Make Unique button under the modifier stack, and click on Reset Transforms under the Heirarchy tab in the sidebar. That often fixes things for various reasons.

It's a really common problem with Max exports. Mirrored objects just muck things up, as do instanced geometry, due to the way max handles them. SFC, 3DS, DXF, JK2, Quake... you name it, mirrored or instanced geometry will muck it up almost every time.

I usually just collapse my models into an editable mesh after I finish them, so as to avoid wierdness such as this. Turns into nothing but raw geometry.

Hah. Silly man. Exporting's the biggest headache this side of radiosity settings.
