A few WIPs and suchlike
« on: September 25, 2003, 08:43:25 am »
It's probably past time I post some of my work, so here's some odds and ends I have in the queue in various places right now. All of these are original designs... and It's probably obvious that I favor the unconventional.

First up, is also my first SFC3 model, which is currently working in-game, with just some final texuting, tweaks, and 'real' game stats worked out. The screenshots are large, so I'm linking externally. Obviously, the loadout is ridiculous for a CL/CA, but this was the for-fun test version, so what the heck.

USS Dauntless 1
USS Dauntless 2
USS Dauntless 3
USS Dauntless 4
USS Dauntless 5
USS Dauntless 6

Next in this list is a Wraith-class stealth scout ship. this is around the same size as a runabout, and what i'd consider a Federation 'black project', as it mounts a crude cloaking device, which technically the federation should never have developed due to treaty considerations... not that that's stopped them in the past. The model is nearing export, with most of the base textures laid down. I chose to go with a very 'clean' look to the texture, as a federation cloak prototype would be imperfect and trade heavily on advanced sensor-stealthing materials to pick up the slack.

Last in the line of things i actually have progess made on is a recent stab at a small Romulan vessel. The idea here is a very advanced frigate, which would be given out only to the elite of the empire, due to its advanced technologies. Possibly a product of Tal Shiar R&D for their own use. the idea is that not everyone with the cash to lay down on a CA or DN (or, in TNZ's case, a BCH) is going to want to. Perhaps they'd prefer a very expensive FF class instead. That's the niche this caters to. An FF that's far more capable than other FFs, but that also comes with a much, much higher pricetag. where BCHs and classes in that area use heavy sheilds and the like to increse survivablity, this class will use high speed and manuveurability, along with a slightly high firepower rating than your average FF. I'd say it's unbalanced, but the pricetag will make up for it, I think. It's an FF intended to run with the big boys, and it's priced accordingly. Model-wise, i've laid down just the base textures; there's a lot of work to be done on it yet.

I've got a number of other projects in mind after these... a sister ship for the Wraith based off of the Akira, and a small collection of what I can only call amusing novelty ships, and I design I found in the back of a technical manual that I liked. Given what my actual non-hobby workload is like, that should keep me busy for ages.

Oh. I'm also considering converting a couple models I did for other games over, just for the heck of it, because they'll be minimal work to convert and they're kinda neat. Those would be here:

 Random Unnamed Light Attack Craft

The Wraith looks like a 24th century Lamborghini design

somehow, I'm not surprised that the Wraith is receiving such response. As fond as I am of the Dauntless and its design philosophy, I'm particularly fond of the Wraith and Raven(the Rom ship). I have a lot of background information on all of them, which will be included in the release, when i finally get around to it.

Despite my previous inclinations to leave the Wraith textures as smooth and clean as possible, I'm considering adding some very subtle aztec-ing to the hull in place to make it a bit more interesting without disturbing the look it's already sporting. Also considering re-doing the phaser strips in some fashion. Gold beams firing off of glowing red lines just doesn't feel *quite* right.

On a side note, you Wraith fans will probably be happy to know that the images are not enhanced in any way by the rendering program. That is exactly what it will look like in-game (though, obviously, I'll be adding glows). Someone was asking me in PM about the way the impulse engines illuminate the exhaust cowling. No, that's not done with lights in the modeller, and it will look just like that in the game.

The dauntless is cool looking, from what I can see. Perhaps some simple 5 view renders would be nice? I can barely see the romulan hull, or the wriath. The only thing is the dauntless lacks obvious busards, which for a fed is rather odd.

I just posted what I actually had rendered out already, since I was posting from class.

The Bussards aren't obvious because it's not a conventional design. I guide your eyes to the fins at the back of the nacelles, which may or may not be all that visible from the screenshots. I'll see about knocking off some more visible renders soon... and you may have to twiddle your gamma a bit. PCs display very dark, And of late I do most of my graphics work on my Powerbook.

Did a little bit of additional texture work on the Wraith the other day. This 6-angle piece is put together from a bunch of screenshots from Taldren's ModViewer tool.
