How much for the OP source code?
« on: September 27, 2003, 11:57:11 pm »
Hi,

Serious inquiry here. How much to buy a copy of the source code of OP for personal use, with the usual "not for resale, distribution, yadda yadda"?

Some of us overpaid thirtysomethings might be interested...

A somewhat off topic tangent to the topic of source codes.

Friday, Relic has released the SOURCE CODE to Homeworld 1, not just SDK, the source code, to Relic own private "Dev Network".

The Network works on he graduated basis. Anyone can sign up, and will gain levels of access to the source code the more they work on the material. (3 levels in total).
So if someone creates a really good mod, Relic will actively sponsor and monitor the projects and give assistance.

What couldn't something like this be done with SFC?

I mean, under RDN's system, many many would have earned access to game source codes. (notice, it's only access to, not open-source/ownership) Mag, Firesoul, NucWessel to to spew out a few names...

Homeworld is slightly older than SFCOP, and its engine is slightly obsolete. (still good, though) granted. But given the dim future of SFC and trek games. Why not give the modders a chance to dig a bit deeper?

(namely: the 2d art files. (holy sprite.q3) and weapon tables.)

I daresay that Relic has the rights to the HomeWorld universe as well as the code.

Exactly. Here, we're dealing with some material that belongs to Paramount.
