Wanting to learn
« on: September 17, 2003, 11:56:46 am »
Hello to everyone.  I am trying to learn how to make  models from scratch.  Since I've been visiting this forum for over 3 years I have seen some really really great ship designs one that comes to mind was a combination of the in game SCS and FBB.  The result was something that should have been named USS-You'd Rather Suck G'agh Out of a Dead Romulan's Ass Than F'Uq with Me.  The attention to detail make think of maybe P81, Higgens or possibly the Duct-Tape guy.  Others make me so sick to to my stomach that it makes me want to dig Ol' Stinky Gene up, sell him to some old voodoo woman in Algeirs Louisiana to make a ruut on all really really bad shipbuilders everywhere so that when they try to mesh they get oozing puss-filled sores on their hard drives and they become members of the Jar-Jar Binks fan club.(Haybe massa meessa wantsa to makesa millenium falcon O-tay!)
But the main reason that I would like to make models is that SOME PEOPLE COME OUT WITH THE MOST REDICULOUS NAMES AND THEY  REALLY NEED TO QUIT.  Just a few days ago I saw a really nice ship design and in the thread were the names Rider in White, Arachne, and I know Asain prositutes everywhere are rejoicing for this one, China Doll.  All I could think of is what William Shatner said on his first and last SNL mc stint "You people need to get a life!"
Anyway I was digging through some really old boxes of mine and I found my old 1979 edition of the Starfleet Technical Manual and I have been wanting to do a TMP era battlecruiser, lightcruiser and battleship.  So any info on how to get started with what programs I will need and how to texture the finished product will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you all, keep up the great work and please no more x-men, gay cowboy bands, or underage asian prositutes as a source of ship name inspiration.

LMAO. That post was a good bit of humor. USS-You'd Rather Suck G'agh Out of a Dead Romulan's Ass Than F'Uq with Me.

I dare someone to write that on their saucer for a humorus screencap.

Well, I'm not a modeler. I think that I'll ad that to my shipnames.txt file though, right before the "HMS Bungholio"

Edited the post down to the part the poster wanted answered.

You will need a PhotoShop style program, the best one you ccan get for a low price is PSP8 (PaintShop Pro 8). Corel Draw na Adobe Photoshop are the high end ones but are more than what you need if you are only talking about texture making. Cost is about 79 USD

The next thing you need is Max 3D 4.o or lower but higher than 2 (or the taldren plug-ins will not work) to do the actual model and export it. the cost of Max is about 300 USD for the cheapest I have seen. I also do not remember if you need UUView or not in max to apply the textures. UUView use to be very expensive, and I never looked it up.

You do not need to spend all that money to start out with. All of my ships are made only using Milkshape ($20), the Assimsoft plugins (free), Irfanview (free), and Powerpoint (already available on most PCs and easily replaced with Word). I would suggest going the cheap route untill you catch on and develope skills. Wait till you are limited by what you have instead of putting out alot of cash and being overwhelmed and giving up. That is my strategy anyway.

P.S. Careful about your cracks at New Orleans

I think no matter how much voodoo this New Orleans woman knows she'll have a hell of a time bringing GR's ashes back to life - he was cremated IIRC, and I think they put some of the ashes in orbit so, hmm. BTW the Kirov style battlecruiser you were refering to was made by Rogue for the members of an online fleet - the FPF I believe? Anyway regardless of any connotations you may think of in relation to the ship names, the specific names were made for the players' ships, I'm guessing one of them does indeed fly around in a USS China Doll online - so leave off on insulting those guys.

I'd suggest you get milkshape for basic modelling until you got the L337 5K1LLZ needed to use max - I got it and am way over my head right now.

Lestat, I know what you mean about Max... I'm still scratching my head, and oozing drool (or maybe it's duramater) out the corner of my mouth when I see what some folk can do with it - but I'm persevering and I think I'm learning...

I'll be posting my latest WIP sometime this evening, so Senor JAYVT3, I hope I don't offend your aesthetic sensibilities.  Incidentally, if it does, at least let me know why... or where you think I'm going wrong.

Sorry, I know this is tasteless, but this simply *screams* to be done... blame it on my twisty sense of humor.

(grin) (maybe the next Teen beauty pagent?)

The one thing that you do have to realize is that people are allowed to choose which names that they like.. and you, of course, are free to change them at your end.  That's one of the wonderful things that make this all work.. SFC encourages you to mod.    But do try to take the David Lee Roth approach to it.  He quotes," Don't sweat the small sh*t, and it's all small sh*t".  Really, in about five years, I'd be surprised if anything that we do here today is still around and being used.  Try to view it all in that kind of context.. it helps.
