From EAW to OP.....
« on: September 15, 2003, 07:28:29 pm »
Having managed to bag a copy of OP off of ebay (AT LAST), I was wondering just what to expect in the way of pros and cons... So who better to ask than you guys....

Here goes...

Are the mission scripts compatible.... ( I know the ship models are)....
Whats "new" and "improved".........
Is the Romulan cloaking device still crap.....
How stable is it by comparison....
What about "eye candy" improvements.....

I think that'll do to start with......

Though any other advice is welcome...

Adios!!!

Probably the fact that it doesn't cloak....

Call me old fashioned but I would've thought the most important technological aspect of a "cloaking" device is its ability to "cloak"....

I'm just pissed off cos I always seem to get shot at when I'm using it....

Well there you go........ Object defeated I think....

SFC3 aint for me though...  I think the Trek ship designers have got lazy and there's no sense of "grandeur" anymore... As far as I'm concerned starship design peaked with the refitted connie...

SFC II OP cloak is designed to reduce/eliminate damage from incoming direct fire weapons.. and to break/ lose lock on from seeking weapons and to prevent seeking weapons from being fired on you when you are cloaked.. plus the improvements on it are that you can now cloak when tractored and also it uses a new damage chart for weapons hitting you. Cloak in OP is beefed up, however an invisible Cloak in Starfleet Battles was an optional rule that people could play with on the board game, however it was elected to stick with the stock rule set for cloak in SFC, SFC II EAW and SFC II OP. that is.. Non invisible cloak with an ability to lose lock of seeking weapons, prevent seeking weapons from being fired on you, and to reduce/eliminate damage taken from direct fire weapons, cloak when tractored, etc...

Hidden cloak is a TV feature and is not a common rule of SFB or SFC, with exception of SFC 3.

1. Scripts not compatible. But, for the vast majority of campaign missions, OP versions are available. And yes models are.

2. New weapons, new arcs, and new races. Improved Fighter control, improved cloak, also improved camera operations.

3. Actually, you are not old fashioned at all. You are the "new" fashioned crowd. The "crap" cloak you so endearingly termed is from the "old fashion" camp. (TOS Balance of Terror)
No, Rom cloak is still visible. But it's damage modifiers have made it reasonably formidable when used in Specific tactical situations. (i.e. this is a not a fire-cloak-repeat device as in SFC3.) Take it however you will.

4. At least as stable, if not more so than EAW.

5. There are a new terrain (ion cloud) but I don't think much else have changed.
