OP D2 Router/WinXP Help Needed: Firewall Error
« on: February 07, 2003, 09:22:49 pm »
Having recently built a new system that runs WInXP, I tried to install and patch OP and run it. Unfortunately, the D2 connection runs into the old "firewall detected" brick wall. I've got a Linksys BEFSR41 router with the old Win98SE system on one line and the new WinXP system on the other. SFC3 D3 runs fine with the proper router port forwarding and no DMZ set. I've tried putting the XP machine in the DMZ, tried various tweaks to the router settings, but nothing works.

If anyone has some tips, I'd appreciate a few. Even if they don't work, it will help me narrow down the possibilities.

Thanks.

JD,

Email me, I have the same router, and seem to be able to get SFC3 to run fine...it's a matter of direct port forwarding for XP in addition to making sure the built in firewall is actually off.

I have the same setup at home one machine running XP with a BEFSR41 if you don't want to mess with port forwarding. This will only work with Windows ME, XP Home and XP Pro.

Go into add\remove windows components and install UPnP it is under networking options. Then make sure you have updated your router firmware to 1.43 or later.

Then install DirectX 9 on the XP machine. The XP computer will now control port forwarding on the router autmatically for games using DirectPlay.

By default this is not installed by XP you will have to manually do it yourself. Anyhow saves me the hassle of reconfiguring my router everytime my daughters computer gets online and play games.

Sten, I tried what you suggested, but OP D2 still won't connect.

Frey, I sent you an email.

Just to clarify, D3 works fine.

OP D2 is what won't connect. I'm getting the old firewall message.

Sten's config should work - when I went from ME to XP Pro it  reset my IP at my game machine (changed one digit) which screwed up my port forwarding.  After an hour of banging my head against the table I thought of checking my IP and ensuring that the IP that was entered in the LinkSys forwarding slot matched - voila!, it worked <knucklehead>.  However, the fact that you were able to connect to SFC3 kinda shoots down that theory - might wanna check it anyways, though.  Also ensure that the XP firewall is turned off - LOL.

Check here:  LinkSys BEFSR41 for GSA and SFC

NOTE: For port forwarding to work correctly, the client machine must be configured with
a static IP address (I disable the dhcp server on the linksys too).

If running windows XP make sure that the firewall(s) are off, and that the
Internet Gateway Device Discovery and Control Client is installed and that
UPnP is not installed.

At the router, check that "Block WAN Request" is disabled and
disable all UPnP port forwarding and fill in the port forwarding table
as in the link above.

Under this configuration SFC2 will work, but SFC3 will need to be informed of the WAN IP address
unser the [Meta] section of the SFC.ini (IPAddress = XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX).

Hope that helps...

Ah, finally got things working again. D2 is up and running with the port forwarding set as mentioned in that link above, plus my 2 static machines given specific IPs (DHCP still turned on in the router to allow me to plug in my laptop when I feel like it).

It took a call to tech support (my brother-in-law), but now everything's AOK.

Thanks again all.
