Scaling in SFC3 What to do?
« on: September 12, 2003, 09:21:25 pm »
Holy smokes the scaling is off in sfc3. If the Norway is 300 meters then the galaxy in game is no more then 400.  I imagine this was done so a borg cube wouldn't
be the size of a planet. I really don't feel like rescaling every ship in game. What do you guys do?  I was adding Sandman's Cheyenne which is suppose to be 394 meters
If its scaled to be 94 meters longer then a Norway, its as big as a Galaxy class. Since I an adding it as a war destroyer, um it looks silly. I mean the scale does/
Sandman's Cheyenne looks awesome.

Have others already rescaled the stock ships? If so what worked better. Makeing the frigates smaller, or the DN's larger. PLus I have no idea what the length
of Rommies are suppose to be.

It depends- I have been rescaling quite a bit; I shrunk the frigates and destroyers, and increased some of the dreadnaughts... Romulans? I would think, just an opinion, that if you lose hope, then just put them at the same size as their Federation counterparts.... frigate to frigate, and so on.... I understood a lot of Romulan ships to be of some size, hence their slightly more powerful impulse and thrusters, but I could be wrong.

Thanks for that. It would be cool if we as a forum could come up with a concensus on scaling.  So ships could be swapped between mods without having to be rescaled. This seams doubtful as I see websites giving different lengths to the same class ships.  In my mod I don't plan on replacing the stock ships. Also I want to keep the d/l file smaller for 56k-ers. Thus
what I may do is just compromise by scaling ships I add in between the ships that are "suppose" to be smaller or larger then they are.

I realise I only mod BC but the concepts is the same so here's my 2 cents:

I would scale all cannon vessels to their canon lengths based on these charts:
http://www.ex-astris-scientia.org/fleet-charts.htm

For kitbashes, measure the saucers off the cannon ships to get their length, since we know it would be much more dificult to make saucers of different sizes that look identicle than a nacelles or torpedo pod. For example, I scaled p81's ambassador to it's caonon size. Measured the saucer of XXXmeters. Then whenever I do an ambassador kitbash, like mackies warspite, or knox's uss aleric, Belmont, or other such ship I make the saucer the same length, and they look nice that way.

As far as non-canon ships, especially romulans and klingons, Decide what role you want the ship to have, and find a canon ship of simila role and make it close to that size. (in otherwords, just guess) Everyone has a different opinion when it comes to non-canon ship size, and if they're going to b***** they're going to do it no matter what size you pick.

Re-scale to your hearts content.

I pay absolutely no attention to canon ship scales. It's futile at best. Even in the episodes you will see that each ship's scale varies to how big the writers want it to be for that episode. Check out the excellent articles at Bernd Schneider's Ex-Astris Scientia website on the futility of determining canon ship scales. Far more practical is to determine you own scale, or do what I do and just try to make all the ships of a particular class roughly the same size regardless of race or canon. Seems to work pretty well for me.

I have scaled all canon ships for SFC3 to the size chart mentioned earlier. It works out pretty well. For the bigger ships, like the Borg Cube, I lowered the ship so that the top is on the axis. That way ships always fly over it and not through it. With a ship that big, it is really fun to fly the Defiant over it. It feels like the SWNH trench run. When the warbird is correctly sized, some ships will actually fly through it. I think it makes it alot of fun! I Would send you my mod, but my computer that it is on is not connected to the internet.
