Quibbles... (but with tons of respect)
« on: September 10, 2003, 07:41:33 am »
Couple of things really.  I have no idea how to model.  I CAN retexture though but no website means no showing off.  Have started a mega detailed (2048x2048) retex of Khalibans superb refit connie for my own use.... However, I digress.... I stuck this on another post but it'll have been missed.  Mackie, if you're out there, your Davids refit has no phaser mount textures on it and i cant fix cos I dont have suitable software.... HELP....

Any one seen Lord Schtupp.... I'm hanging on for his Antares but I'm down to a couple of fingers and I feel I may fall soon....  You know what would be good... If I can post pics directly on this... i've done a funky Hospital Ship although it never gets used... Uss DeForest Kelley: NCC-1920.... It looks great but I need another opinion....

Feedback Needed

Oh, and respect due to Rogue NineCH...  There's great stuff on his site and it's a fitting reminder that TMP IS the golden age of fleet design...

I'd love to see your ships. 2048x2048 textures though, won't that kill most lower end machines having a few of those ships on screen?

Sounds like Sandman is willing to help! Cool!

Qapla!

www.hostmysig.com  has free pic hosting as well. The limit is 10 though for the free account.

The highres textures will be fine when finished.... since I realised that the game itself can only run 16 bit colour max, then using palleted 8 bit images means you end up with a 2048x2048 weighing in at just over 4meg which compares pretty well with a 24bit 1024x1024 image at just over 3meg.  My pc is by no means the fastest in the world but I have found that the game runs slower due the complextity of Khalibans model and not the textures used on it....

Its a big project though and since I'm starting from scratch I get to pick all the colours.....

It'll be like rewriting Lord of the Rings or something....

Feel free to disagree, by the way...

Cool!

You should try Cleeve?s Excellentia next; it?s a great ship but needs a texture upgrade badly?

IMO-----Any improved clarity in maps greater than 1024 will only be noticed at extremely close range.  In the game environment, I don't see that occurring all that often.  So, in a nutshell, I don't see the point in adding stress to the rendering engine and bumping up the file sizes to achieve a level of visual clarity that most people will never see.  I'm not saying that you shouldn't,  I'm just saying that I wouldn't.  And that I wouldn't use it in my game.  On the other hand, with so many people around here doing wallpapers,  the hi res maps would be nice for close up rendering or animations.  Anyway,  this is just my opinion, and no offense is meant.  Hope none is taken.

Oh, I agree.. Completely... Though i really am only doing it to say "look what i can do"... It's a bit pointless in game granted but since I cant make it generally available then it's not going to go anywhere..... To be honest, more of my time will be taken up retexing at 1024 res as it's more useful.... Gotta work on that webspace problem though..

You do get that cloase in bridge commander, I may be interested in those. They aint going to do much to my computer...lol

And I find a few of mackies ships are missing either the enitre tmp style phaser emitter, or the little tities on them. Now I dunno if it's a model issue or a texture issue, but I am hoping I can get them fixed as I kick them out for BC. If that's the case, the fixed textures will be set back here. I already have 1 set of fixes for one of his tng's and another for the TOS davids That I did myself.

I also realised that not all surfaces need to have that level of detail.  Pylons dont need it and "details" dont.... So I am just doing the 4 main ones.... Saucer top and bottom.. Secondary hull and nacelles....

Isn't it great aztecing from scratch.......

Just out of interest - how do you get the aztec to wrap around into a circular shape like on the saucer textures? Cuz I can't for the life of me figure it out.

Well I draw in a block with corel draw then distort it so it looks like pie slice... Easy enough to do with Corel Draw or Adobe Illustrator... once you've got your slice you just repeat it.... have a look at the link above... its useful
