(Sorry re-ask) How to you Generally Name Your textures?

I'm working on a Fed/Klink Hybrid "IKS Atolm Mark I",
that is half Pneumonic81s' Sovreign,
and half Cleeves' Vorcha,

After I apply the pre-existing textures to the
Sovreign Deflector-Dish,
Sovreign Red Front and Blue Sides,
Sovreign Impulse Engines,

Vorcha Impulse Engines,


I'm gonna have to make hybrid Sovreign/Vorcha Texutres,
Oy ...

Anyways,

What system of name textures to you folkes use?
What is your rational?
Do you find it hard to keep track of the new textures that you use?

Well, I suppose it depends on what the texture is of. Nmae it after the parts it textures. Most of the mods I have have things like Sacuer1 and saucer2, pylon, warp, impulse..ect

Well, I don't make ships or textures, I can only tell you what I've seen for the most part in the ones I've downloaded. Bit if I did, I would lable them what they are for. If you've got alot of textures, it problay works the best anyways, as 1 texture is probably for 1 object. IE nacelle, markerlight, deflector, registry ect. I've seen things like Lhull and Dhull (light and dark) Lwing (lower wing) ect for klingons.

There is no correct way. Name them so you understand them. I try to name my textures the same name that the group has. If you have 30 groups and 30 textures.
Group1 could use group1.bmp and so on.  

Have you figured out the mapping yet? I only ask cause you have lots of untextured kitbashes. I was just going to suggest that I find it easier to map in milkshape.
I have max but do not understand much of it yet. MIlkshape is more straight forward I believe. Just a thought and good luck.

Since I don't have a 3D program i am stuck using the same names as the orginal author used and do not name them at all.

The best way is as always what ever makes sense to you.

one general rule;
keep them short.

lightwave likes short names.
3dsmax likes long names.

makes converting a hell when theres dozens of textures.

I have to combine Pneumonic81s' Sovreign textures with
Cleeves' Vorcha textures,

I use Adobe Photoshop 6.0,

yeah something like that , i usually use 6 chars whenever i do stuff alike...
Paint shop pro 8 here , mostly because its helluva lot easier to use and less heavier program.
Photoshop is better in the long run though, have to agree with that its a better program all around when it comes to image editing or a job like that.
