SFC 1 and Windows XP
« on: September 06, 2003, 04:57:01 pm »
It appears that Windows XP renders most of the hotkey bindings useless for SFC 1 namely the Function keys that control view. I attempted to run the program as Windows 95, or 98 but that method resulted in only being able to access the multi-player spawn. Single player campaign and skirmish were not available.

Has any one run into this problem?
If so, how have you gotten around it?

Thanks in advance to anyone that can assist me.

Not sure how the keyboard works. but the "multiplayer spawn" means you did not have the SFC1 disc in the CDrom drive. SFC1, unlike SFC2, does have a CD check. (if CD is not found, you can play MP only. and there have to be 2 discs among the 6 MP players.)

I know that.

Here is what I did:

I put SFC Gold Edition in my CD Rom drive.
I installed it.
I played it, but the hot keys did not all work as described in the manual.
I realized that SFC was made for Windows 95/98.
I went into the preferences in Windows and told it to run SFC Gold Edition as a Windows 95 program.
When I started SFC Gold Edition with disk still in drive, it did not allow me to access the single player skirmish or the campaign.
I exited the game.
I went into the preferences in Windows and told it to run SFC Gold Edition as a Windows 98 program.
When I started SFC Gold Edition with disk still in drive, it did not allow me to access the single player skirmish or the campaign.
I exited the game.
I went into the preferences in Windows and told it to run SFC Gold Edition as a Windows XP program.
When I started SFC Gold Edition with disk still in drive, but the hot keys did not all work as described in the manual.

This is an apparent BUG. I have not had any problem with SFC Gold Edition with any other operating systems.

Again, I ask:

Has anyone come across this problem?
If so, how did you get around it?

Thanks.

Have you patched the game correctly to the current version of 1.03?

It is not a game bug, it is a problem that Microsoft created with it's December 2002 Updates.

if you got the patch from Interplay, they do not host the last official version of the game...

Gold Edition is v 1.02.01, the latest version of the game is 1.03

go to my web site and install per instructions.. follow them in exact order !!!

http://www.nightsoftware.com/effhq/sfc12.html

then if your SFC 1 Single player is not working correctly after patching, then contact me at pestalence@startrek.net and i will send you a file fix that Interplay supplied to me...

I promise that once you finish the patch process that is exactly on my site, install the bonus missions, and possibly me sending you the single player fix file, your game will work.

Hope this helps

Ok, Here is the deal. I don't think that it is the Microsoft update thing. The computer on which I am running the game is not connected to the internet. I would have no way of securing the update. However, I am pleased to say the problem is solved or at least successfully circumnavigated. There appears in the Starfleet Command main directory two .exe's that will run the game. One runs, that stupid "register now for prizes" thing, the intro movie, and the game, and one just runs the game. The programs menu shortcut is to the one that runs the junk and the game. This is also the one that I am having problems with. The other, though, the one that runs just the game, allows the hotkeys to work. So problem solved. Thanks for the replies and the helps. I don't know of any other game that the fans are so willing to help each other out even down to the technical support.

thanks,

This is yet another reason why I probably will not use XP and just stick with Win 98 (for as long as I can) because XP and all the other .net stuff from Microsoft is crap!  From what i have seen, the only advantage XP has over Win 98 is the a few multi media applications and 64 bit capability.  But to pay that hefty of a price for such a peice of junk (that has troubles running most older software) i just stick with Win98.  I'm so made an MS anymore, I'm even thinking about going with Linix Red Hat or Lindows.  Much cheaper OS and lot less bugs.  Just wish more companies (like Taldren) would consider making games for that OS too.

Magnum357,

you are also forgetting the much improved memory management and less memory leaks in XP and the fact that if a program locks, all you have to do now is CTRL+ALT+Delete and end task on program not responding instead of rebooting...

also, with mine, it came as XP Pro  MCE... that means

XP Pro for running a server

and MCE is Media Center Edition.. PC came with TV Tuner card with DVD Burner.. think of watching HBO on my PC then making a DVD all from a remote across the room without having to do anything but boot up my PC and put in a blank disk...

plus i don't have to buy DVD's anymore, I just wait until Cinamax, or Showtime, or HBO shows the show I want and make a DVD.. even has a timer to record the show.. plus the software acts like a TIVO.. as in rewinding or pausing live TV....

I hadd 98 SE for about 4 years... then I got this machine with XP Pro MCE (OEM available only) and I never looked back..

I have never had a system crash, and it remains stable even if i keep my machine running for 2 or more months... and this is my laptop...

I was never able to do that in 98 SE.. I had to reboot that thing at least once a day... due to memory leaks and programs staying resident in the physical ram.. XP virtually eliminates that...

but to each his own.
