Old dog...late coming: HELP PLEASE!
« on: September 08, 2003, 11:15:57 am »

Greetings folks,

I'm completely new to the electronic version of SFC.  I played the game A LOT when I was young, with the floppy blue book and that damn cardboard squares my mom would keep vacuuming up...

I never really looked twice at this game before because the last several years I've been playing the rps with the exception of the Freespace Games (any you guys play that...I loved that game).

I just bought SFC2:EAW on Saturday and all I've done is download what I think is the latest patch and played my a$$ off.  My question for you folks: What all do I need to do to get to finish getting this game ready to play?  Stuff like, are there any great mods I need to install, missions to add, expansions to add, ini files to tweak, etc. etc.

Please help.  I'm loving this game...it's the kind of thing I dreamed about when I was 13/14 and killing myself trying to figure out the rules and tables (I grew up in a small town where most of my friends, if they played anything was D&D...was only a couple of kids around who played SFC, and then not enough to really get into it...)

I deeply appreciate you taking the time to respond to this post,

Eltanin

btw: yes...I have started crusing the forums...I'm asking for leg up.

Well, a lot of people are playing the "stand alone" expansion to SFC2, entitled:

Starfleet Command: Orion Pirates

So, if you have a chance you may want to pick that one up too, it adds new weapons, arcs, a whole new era, and pirate cartels.

As far as what you might want, well, there are model's available that can really make the game a visual delight, but it's kind of a pick and choose thing, just browse the Model forum and look around for the various modelers sites.

Orion Pirates has the OP+ mod, which adds a bunch of ships from SFB, and points them to different model markers so it really shakes up the visual look of things as well.  I think there was an effort at one point to do the same for EAW as well, but I didn't keep up on that one.

As far as resources, you can check out:

SFCX.org
Starfleet Universe
Xenocorp

as well as many other sites for SFC: EAW and OP resources, utilities, etc.  I'm sure a bunch of people will chime in on this, possibly before I even get done writing this.

I know that for EAW, SFCX has a variety of new mission scripts available, as well as the lastest patch for all the games (which should be on the other sites as well), in addition to a guide to editing your settings to make make your campaigns just the way you want them to be.

Most of all... WELCOME!  When you get the chance you may want to try out the D2, there is a big OP campaign going on right now, but I'm not sure what's going on EAW side (I'm an OP junky )

what he said and more.Op is finally comming into its own as a seperate game and looks to be the future of the online gamming part 0f the two sfc2 titles. If you check out the dynaverse2 portion of these forums there are some people either giving away the game or getting it for those that cant find it in their area.Im thinking that interplay or Taldren has it for sale on their web sight for like 5 dollars or so.not sure tho about that.
Finally welcome to the game of sfc it really rocks and i think you will enjoy these games for along time to come.

Hey Guys, thanks for the note.  Time I should have spent working to day has been spent looing for SFC:OP at stores in the the Toronto area and haven't found squat yet...sigh.

Anyhow, this game looks like it has legs for me which is great cause I haven't had the best of luck with games lately.  Plus, if the mods are half as cool as some of what I've seen this'll be great.

(I'm assuming like other games mods come at the expense of other stuff that appears in the game)

Thanks again,

e

Not really sure what this means, unless you are talking about other games mods that strip features from the game in order to pidgeon hole it into a little niche area.  The mods that are for SFC, really don't do that.  The models, and shiplists thus far have pretty much included everything there is to offer and just built upon the base game.

Many missions scripts have been added, which is good, because many of the ones that come with the game, while cool, just don't work right.

So, really there have only been additions to the game, rather than any subtractions.

I agree that OP seems to be the future (heck if only for the cool shots of Maulers splitting a ship in half) but I didn't want to overplay it since in the past even mentioning it would get people on your case.  GET OP!  I believe it's still available at the Interplay store for cheap, but trying to find it at a local retailer may be difficult, as most places have long since sold their copies off.  It is aquirable online though.

This is great!  Pigeonholing is a good way to describe since you could work only with a finite number of table entries...(sorry I'm not techy enough to get the language right)  I think I'm really going to get into this...

Since you mentioned your early SFB roots, which many of the denizens of the niche inhabit on occasion,  it must also be pointed out that OP has correct Klingon Boom Phaser Arcs coded btw, in addition to other SFB weapon systems .... MIRV= multi warhead drone/missles, Mauler (mentioned above by the honorable EmeraldEdge) and a few new systems for Taldren's take on the X series of ship development...OP is the title to look for.

When (not if) you make it over to the SFC3 side of the house, come on over to BattleClinic and see what trouble you can get into. We also support SFC2 titles.

Thanks for the shameless self-promotion. Oh, and 30 lashes with a wet noodle to  Emerald Edge  for forgetting about us.

Just the obvious note that a SFB player will want to download and install the excellent OP+ shiplist created by Firesoul - most people seem to consider his ships a distinct improvement to the baseline game in terms of balance and SFB lineage. Plus he opens enough model slots to make the models distinctive to the ship classes - <G>.

From what I've read I'm really look forward to adding OP+...but I haven't found a local version of OP.  I'd rather not have to order through interplay if there's a copy around here (Toronto) I can zip down and pick up.  (Any locals who can point me in a direction...?)

Thanks for the reps, I think I forfieted a mission that might have botched things for me. (?) (long long story).  I started again and it seems like the story is developing.

must get op....must mp...

In the Dynaverse II forum, there is a thread of fanatical proselytizing . . . . er . . . avid OP fans . . . titled "So, Who here still needs a copy of OP?". Don't know if it's still running or not, but might be worth your while.
