prestige change help

can someone please help me...
i am trying to change the prestige by editing the character.gif file.
first how do you make a backup copy?
second i open the file with notepad change the value and try to exit and it wants
me to save so i say yes. then it says i can't save becuase the file has read only attributes
i try to change them that doesn't work, then it asks me if i want to save it in my documents!!

what am i doing wrong..!?? please help  it's for starfleet command 3
