Something I'd like to try-kitbashing
« on: August 22, 2003, 12:34:16 am »
I got a knox challenger and niagra over ehre, and I thought it would be cool to put the galaxy-X (aka dominion war) galaxy nacelles on them from one of the knox galaxy's.. I was wondering, how exactly I chop a nacelle of one and add it to another?

What software you got? I can help you if your using MIlkshape.  What ever you use the process is similar.  Some models will be divided into several groups. If so, then it will be easier.  You can select the groups that do not contain the nacel and delete them.  If the model is in 1 group, you just need to zoom in close to the nacel area so you can pick out the vertexes that make up the nacel. When you have them all selected, you can move them away from the ship. This is whenl you might find you accidentally selected some that don't belong to the nacel. Then you have to try again, this time getting only the nacel vertexes. Once you have just the nacel. Delete the rest of the ship if you don't need it. Then save the file as Nacel.

Then you can import or merge, (depending on software)  the other ship you need to combine and remove its nacel and replace it with this one.

Hope this helps.  btw you always spell my name wrong. It is Formo

In max, open the MODIFY panel, select ELEMENT (vertex, line, poly, face,ELEMENT), then draw a selection box around the part you want. Say you want to select the nacelle...in the front viewport, draw a selection box around the nacelle; it should be highlighted. Then change to POLY and while holding the alt key down, draw a selection box that intersects the part you want to de-select, without touching the nacelle. Once you have the part you want highlighted (selected), scroll down the MODIFY panel until you find DETACH...click it, then name it whatever you want. After it's detached, de-select POLY. The part should now be shaded differently than the rest of the model. Click on your part and it should then be selected. Re-select the model (de-select the part) then hit the delete key and you should be left with the part you wanted. Then save as whatever you want. Reset max, then open the model you want to add the part to. Then go to...FILE>MERGE select your saved part...no to both dialogue boxes. You might have to scale the part up or down in order to get it the right size, or even just to see it, but if you're going from .mod models, they should already be sized closely.

I hope this is understandable...kinda hard to desribe it without pics. I hope this helps ya.

scale isn't an issue. What I'll do is scale the recieve vessel to it's proper size, then measure the nacelle. I will try that saturday. I'll be busy tomarrow but I'll let you know how it turns out. IF this works I am going to repalce the ugly ass nacelles of the cheyenne to those from a new orleans and see what I get.

What you get is something that will look better to you even if you don't do it right

In the case of the cheyenne, yur probably right. I could probably add anything short of TOS nacelles to it and it would look better than paramount made it look.
