Heh...here we go again with the "ditch the ATI and get an nVidia....."

My system (which runs EVERYTHING, including all SFC titles just fine):

Athlon XP 2700+  (Thermalright SLK-800/Vantec Tornado HSF, 12x195)
Asus A7N8X-Deluxe (1002A1 SATA "Uber" BIOS)
1024 MB (2x512 MB) Corsair XMS PC3200C2
Sapphire Radeon Atlantis 9700 Pro (Cat. 3.4, slightly overclocked)
ViewSonic VX900 19" LCD
80GB Maxtor (7200 RPM/ATA133)
Logitech MX-700 wireless mouse
Windows XP Pro

It should be noted that the SFC titles also ran just fine on my older Athlon T-bird 1.3 ghz system with an ATI Radeon 8500 and the very first Cat drivers.  They have, in fact, worked with every ATI driver I have ever used.  I'll even switch to Cat 3.6 tonight and log right into the OP dyna and play just fine.

I'm not sure exactly what's Makie's particular problem is, but it ISN'T his video card or his drivers as long as both are in good working order and installed properly.

Let's not act like nVidia cards don't have their share of problems.  Mackie has one of the absolute best cards available on the market right now, even better that some of these nVidia's out now that are a generation newer.  Unless there is something wrong with his installation or the video card hardware itself, it isn't his card.

Just my two cents...

the problem is the drivers on the Radeon card...

I have come to notice that most players using Radeon Cards seem to have driver problems... that is a problem 2 fold..

#1 for some unknown reason, when OS configures the hardware upon first install of the card, or even a full system reinstallation, 85% of the time, Radeon creates a hardware conflict with the motherboard by sharing a IRQ slot with another component...

again that isn't always, only about 85% of the time...

#2 Radeon card drivers need a lot of work to get them to WHQL standards.. when was their last driver WHQL certified? My Friend told me that he found a hack site that has hacked 3.6 drivers and his card now runs flawlessly.. however with the 3.6 from the ATI site, SFC III locked up continously...

I don't know where the Cracked driver is, but my friend that has it said that the driver works perfectly for all his games...

yes i support NVidia and their cards only because it majorly aggrivates me to have to hunt down drivers and hardware and having to check and recheck my system config just so a ATI product can work on it....

It may be a problem directly related to Intel Chipsets and ATI Chipsets... the AMD chipset and ATI chipsets may not have a problem, I don't know as I only use Intel....

I may be wrong, but for myself using NVidia and Intel together, I have never had a single problem using any game or software so long as my drivers were WHQL certified... and this has been on laptops...

my system specs + another 512 memory -> http://www.nightsoftware.com/effhq/Toshiba_Portables__Satellite_5205.htm

I haven't used ATI cards since my Rage Pro... then I went to GeForce II and I liked it a lot better.. I still comapre machines and vid cards.. but the ATI Driver and hardware conflict issues are what is keeping me away on the Radeon.. I would get a Radeon if ATI had the stability that NVidia has on their drivers.. but until there is a couple of years of stability on ATI's end, I'm die hard for NVidia...

It's not an inherent ATI problem. I have an 8500/128 and every game I own runs fine. This includes all the SFCs from 1 to 3. As far as the drivers having Micro$oft's blessings, every driver that I've ever gotten from ATI is windows XP certified except for the very first DX9 driver that was released the same day as DX9. I'm assuming that was because there wasn't enough time to get it certified but ATI wanted their customers to have up to date DX9 drivers so they could enjoy the benefits of their 9000 series cards with it.

Trust those of us with 1st hand experience with ATI cards. It's a bit more reliable than "a friend of a friend" info. No offense intended, but ATI cards work just fine in my experience.

It would not surprise me at all if your integrated sound is causing the problem.  I have heard of some problems with that in the past, though I am using the integrated sound on my motherboard without any issues whatsoever.  Granted..we have different motherboards and processor brands.

I assume you have either uninstalled and reinstalled Cat 3.6 and/or have tried reverting back to an earlier version, just in case it's the driver installation itself?  (which, guess what..happens with nVidia drivers, too...  :rolleyes:)

lil bit of a late reply but ah well, my intergrated soundcard was messing with my old nvidia2 card, not the best card i know, but it caused the computer to completely lock up roughly 3 minutes into a game, when i say lock up i mean lock up: cant move mouse, num lock wouldnt respond, sound would crash, screen would freeze.

Just as an experiment, I would try going in the BIOS and disabling the sound all together, and see what effect that has on the problem...  Being an ASUS, you should also have a physical jumper somewhere to disable the sound also, in case the BIOS switch doesn't do anything...  I seem to remember SB Live cards messing with several games, though that's just a vague impression.  If that solves the problem, then just leave it off and put in an actual sound card.  I have successfully run an ATI 8500/64, Catylist drivers, with a Creative Audigy sound card on an ASUS P4T533C, and had no problems with SFC3

Only by editing the sfc.ini file, I think.

Try setting the following sfc.ini settings to "0":
Code:
[Sound]
voice=3
GlobalVolume=100
MusicVolume=75
VoiceVolume=100
MaxChannels=16
CollisionAlert=0

Best,

Just for my info could you say what sort of cordless mouse it is.

I have a Logitech MX700 and I don't think I am having any problems with the default settings.

So do I and neither am I.

I was going to suggest checking his "fastwrites" setting and disabling it if iot was toggled on.  Was worth a try, but clearly not the problem...heheh.

Since you are using a Radeon card, you won't be able to run the game in 32 bit color mode.. reduce it to 16 bit desktop color...

if that doesn't help, get the catalist 2.6 drivers.. those work well with SFC.

if you want problem free running og games on PC without having to play match maker with drivers to games, get rid of the ATI and get the GeForce FX 5900 Ultra with 128MB DDR onboard.. Crystal gaming there and all the drivers are WHQL to work.

Radeon has driver problems between games.. such as I have a friend that needs 5 different drivers to play 12 different games....

however, i have always run NVidia GeForce cards and never had a driver problem so long as I only got the WHQL drivers.. on the FX card, all the drivers are WHQL, so no worries there.. And with SFC III - Geforce will run it in 32 bit color, Radeon can't, unless they improved their drivers since last march.

I bet that the problem is your Graphics driver... the Catalist 2.6 I know will work for SFC III, maybe not any other game, but it will with SFC III, however, you will still have to run the game in 16 bit color..

Hope that this info helps.
