well here is your answer.

as a veteran of these forums, ( note my reg date, almost 3 years ago) that date was around when we switched to these forums from the old message boards at interplay. those boards sucked, interms of finding a post a few days old.

anyway getting back, as a veteran i requested the rating system be removed, because people like blitzkrieg a member for one week were giving veterans like me one star because i had to tell him a stern from a bow.

which doesn't reflect my true value as the veteran I am.

taldren honoured my request in the standing of respecting a long time community member.

No offence to Cruis. In intended, I want to emphasize that Cruis. In's view does not necassarily reflect all veteran players. (I know a few players who do not hold this opinion.)
A new player has just as much right to critisize someone's claims as a veteran, after all we were all newbie once.

Not all of the veterans have this "we know better than you" attitude (Or NannerSlug will have a field day with his "elitism" stickers...)

But without having the stars doesn't bother me at all...

Cruis. In, everybody should be proud about something he has done. but in real life, being a member of a forum for over 3 years is no real achievement, you won´t earn a single coin with that...
just think about it

i have many achievements. and I am not so insecure that I have to list them for you.

my post reeked of sarcasm, go read it again. if you thought it was serious, then well.....i really have no advice I could give you on how to lighten up.

not surprising that someone who came here two weeks ago would tell me that I can't earn a single coin with my achievement of being here three years.

I've earned more than a single coin my boy...i got a starship.

I never had any stars, really don't care if they're gone, couldn't care less if they come back... but I can understand that people who "earned" their way up to a solid 4-5 star rating would be upset when they're no longer there.  But if we're getting rid of stars, shouldn't we get rid of post numbers and ranks too (just play'n devil's advocate)?

heh, blitzkrieg i seen you on some server which was it.

i played triangle, activision B, and am on sfc3.net now.

btw, i suck, because look i have been here 3 years but have posted less than 270 times. hahaahaha

i am only around when i am on vacation or sick. now im sick. also i mainly drift in and out as the different sfc fade, sfc2 held nothing for me after the triangle 2.0 server was taken down due to frustration with rule breakers, the campaign was so good.

back now for sfc3, gone when bored...only to pay visits instead of posting.

so infact someone with 6 months here could be more valued because they may be a modeller, and contribute something tangible. i contribute nothing but discussion on the game.

which reminds me, go to d3 experiences, im posting a new thread. about big ships.

what was the point to my post?

begin federation encryption methods.

Sounds Good I mean what is the differance if you have 1 star or 5 .....  or 1 post or 1000

I thought the stars were cool .. I mean even if you have been here for years that shouldnt matter  ... you get rated on what people think of your posts

This may sound harsh, but I simply can't invision ever caring about how a person on UBB board "likes" or "dislikes" me or the posts I make.  I believe I had a 4 star rating with 6 rates.  If that had been a 1 star rating with 20 rates, I could care less.   I can't see anyone around here having so fragile an ego that a 1 star rating would break their confidence, destroy their self-worth, or make them insane.  I know us trekkers are famous for not having lives, but COME ON...I say turn the stars back on, so people who don't like each other can use them in their flame wars and the rest of us can get a good laugh out of it.  Either that or turn off post count, registration date, the whole kitchen sink, and leave just the user name.   And if you find yourself fretting over your ranking on this board, in the words of William Shattner...........GET A LIFE!

Peace.

KIRK: Spock, confirm!

SPOCK: Confirmed Captain...I have also lost contact with the Shapely Center.

KIRK: Captain's Log, Stardate Unknown. With the dissapearence of all the stars, the Enterprise crew is paralyzed,

Ya know, Cruis. In, for a 'veteran', you sure don't seem to be well informed...

And I find it rather interesting that you're calling Harry on his two minor spelling mistakes, when you don't seem to have discovered the wonder that is capitalization...

But, hey, what do I know. I'm disagreeing with you, a 'veteran', so I must be only another 'dumb newb.'

Oh I just saw, that how funny

You said you were ill and that?s why you are posting, I expect it?s because of either one of two reasons. Either your one of those people who like winding people up by acting in such a contentious, conceited and egotistical way or you actually buy into this veteran stuff making you quite a sad little man.

The thing is, what some people forget is, this is a computer game. You get little respect from people for being good at or being dedicated to a game, except from piers who play the same or similar. This is true because the most insecure among gamers frequently vie for power or respect in this small community as to bring them something they are unable to gain outside of this environment.

Do you see, he?s only acting out because he?s either an a?hole or he?s just insecure?

Thought I would give you something to do while you is bored/board

I don't know about that view, instead
of dumping on people in my posts
I just gave them a bad rating and moved on.

I found that this helped to reduce the name-calling
and divisiveness. As well as corroborating my
views with others.

It also provided motivation (however small)
for playing nice on these boards.

Now, there is no anonymous way to rate another
user, one must make their feeling clear in a post
as there is no other outlet.

If it is silly to attach your personal ego to a simple rating
on a forum then why were thay removed?

I thought they were a good thing.

Will we be allowed to keep the polls?

Wow, not bashing here, but do you pratice that posting style?

Dave, there is a simple way to avoid some of this.  If you or someone would have posted in the announcements thread that,

"After an experiment with poster rating, we have determined that the system is devicive and we have removed the feature from these forua.  Thank you for your understanding."

Most of the griping would have gone away.  It really is a non issue.

But when you make changes, ignore the feedback, then come down with an IRON Fist buried an a single thread, it really brings the companies customer relations into question.  I mean, some people in this thread liked the feedback feature and you have just questioned their character?  Is that what you were trying to do?

Taldren, as a company used to be very customer responsive.  I know you guys have gotten somewhat burned about in the past, but maybe you have gone a little too far in the other direction?

There are other threads that deserve a responce, the "unban" thread comes to mind.  But if you do respond to it, please be careful how you do it.

Often, how you say something is as important as what you say....

Thanks,

jd

I guess they did have there uses, I voted one person 1 star and few others full stars when I saw somthing I liked of theres. It was if, not only could I say good post man but I could show my appreciation in another way. I personaly liked the idea, but will not cry over it going.

Also personaly I dont care a great deal over what is said or felt about me I wont cry. However its always nice to hear nice things!

There should be a poster appreciation thread for this purpose

Some people must be really insecure to need to have little stars telling them their worth in society.

Thier silly, devisive and their not coming back.

Thanks,

Dave

Wow, Dave...friendly attitude ya have there.

Where was the hue and cry regarding their devisive and silly nature?  I saw no evidence of this.  The first discussion I noted regarding the stars was in this thread after they were axed.

In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't matter, of course.  I really don't buy your explanation, though.

user ratings of others does work, take a look at the slashdot forums.  I for one happened to like it because if I were in a hurry I would skim through threads and catch the ones with big stars next to their names and trust their experiance over non/low starred people.

Any other way doesn't really work to 'rate' how useful a poster's information is, or how believable it is.  Certainly not registration date as we can see from Cruis In, he sets a wonderful example of how to be ignorant and completely unhelpful to the community.  Post count certainly doesn't work with 'pharming' or spamming of other threads possible.

It's not a security thing, not an ego thing, if I rated someone, it's because I found their information highly useful, or utterly incorrect.  I'd rather have a way of ID'ing who is most likely correct or incorrect via simple star counts verses having to read my way through a confusing, wordy, flamy set of posts after that.

Recap:  User ratings are far superior in determining validity of the poster than registration date or post count due to the latter two being able to be 'fixed'.  (heck, I bought SFC 1 and 2 and had played them extensively but I didn't care to register onto these forums, if I own SFB the original black and white booklet (which I do, along with the utterly confusing expansions 1-3 and supplement A) does that make me better than you Cruis?  According to your logic I am God compared to you in validity)

Before I exit stage left, this whole thing still begs the question...

So Dave, if the user ratings get put down, why retain the rating for the threads themselves? Where's the logic in that? Why not axe all signs of ratings if they're so, and I quote, " silly and devisive,"? Hm?

And if I get banned over this stupid little inquiry, then we'll know just what kind of admin you really are Mr. Ferrell. I'm not trying to be belligerent or anything, just simply curious and  somewhat alarmed at your more or less amoral response earlier in the thread...

Heh...I hear ya, Chris...

...I said the same thing Blade here on RW when we were playing on Triangle X and we talked about the user ratings.  I thought it was interesting that this individual had been rated so many times and sat with one star.  I found it heartening that his "truth" seemed to have so little support.

Whether it's true or not, I'm certainly more willing to buy this conspiracy theory over some fantasized "devicive and silly" nature.  As I said before...it really doesn't matter too much.  I agree with some that the user ratings do help positively mold people's behavior on a forum to a certain extent, but it's certainly not a perfect system.

Well here is my totally uninformed supposition.  (Checks sign up date to make sure I am not a newbie)

I think the forums were brought "online" with all the bells and whistles.  So there was no real "decision" to put stars in.  They were default.  Or maybe they weren't.  I completely understand why they were removed.  Their use was mostly punitive, from everything I had seen (and I posted an OT topic specifically to get as many rates as possible) they had mostly to do with whether or not you like what some one said.  While this may be fine for some, I had hoped that they would be used to rate HOW people communicated in here.  If someone constantly trolls give them a one.  If someone always keeps their temper and argues their point (however wrong that point may be !) well, give them a five.

Why leave the topic ratings.  Well there is nothing "personal" about them.  I use it to rate the usefulness or my opinion of general worth of a thread.  If it is funny, or informative, raises a good question, give it a good rating.  If it is "Bush is Hitler!!!" or "Nuke the Middle East!!!"  well I think you know what I would rate it.

However when someone like Nanner receives a one star rating after 30 some rates (he at least deserves a 2 ) it is obvious that someone is just out to punish him for his views.  He conducts himself (again in my opinion) as well or better than most of this forum's denizens.  Now keep in mind I think he is nuts in his rabid anti SFB rantings and I personally blame him for me not getting GAW. !!!

So like anything it was something to be tried out and we (as a collective) refused to use it as it was intended.  So it has been removed.  Oh well... I liked them but I totally understand why they were removed.

I also think their is nothing in Dave's tone to be offended by.  Unless you are feeling that this is a direct jab at you.  In which case you really need to work on your self-esteem.

If they were to be brought back (I know they aren't but hey...):

Let people change a rating.
Make people responsible for their rating (take away anonymity)
Require a "reason" in order to rate someone.

Fair enough Raven.  Basically, your opinions on this issue are as much conjecture as any other opinion stated here.  I do buy that perhaps the forums were brought up with everything "turned on" without much thought as to whether they should have been turned on or not.

I'm not sure how you can be certain that a given individual's rating was somehow "punitive" in nature and, as such, was wrong or innacurate.  It sounds like you make the assumption that people made ratings based upon the name of a poster, not the content of their message.  Perhaps in some cases that is true, but I trust most people to make honest assessments on a case-by-case basis.  At any rate, I certainly do.  If I go to the trouble to rate someone, I take into account their behavior and contributions as a whole.   It could very well be that the individual's views are truly frowned upon by the people who rated him or her.  In such a case, what is wrong with being punitive?  If a low rating maybe gives a person pause as to their behavior and views, I'd say there's some progress possibly being made.

BTW...people don't have to take DIRECT jabs at me to offend me.  While I'm slow to be offended, I can find offense in "jabs" directed at others.  Zero self-esteem problems here.

I would agree that reasons for ratings and taking away anonimity would be great.  The old StarFleetComms fora had "postive," negative" and "neutral" ratings and allowed you to enter a few lines for your reasoning.  Persons then accumulated "stars" based upon the number of positive ratings (with comments).  Ratings without comment counted for less.  It was a great system, I felt.

well here is your answer.

as a veteran of these forums, ( note my reg date, almost 3 years ago) that date was around when we switched to these forums from the old message boards at interplay. those boards sucked, interms of finding a post a few days old.

anyway getting back, as a veteran i requested the rating system be removed, because people like blitzkrieg a member for one week were giving veterans like me one star because i had to tell him a stern from a bow.

which doesn't reflect my true value as the veteran I am.

taldren honoured my request in the standing of respecting a long time community member.

I never had any stars, really don't care if they're gone, couldn't care less if they come back... but I can understand that people who "earned" their way up to a solid 4-5 star rating would be upset when they're no longer there.  But if we're getting rid of stars, shouldn't we get rid of post numbers and ranks too (just play'n devil's advocate)?

i am only around when i am on vacation or sick. now im sick. also i mainly drift in and out as the different sfc fade, sfc2 held nothing for me after the triangle 2.0 server was taken down due to frustration with rule breakers, the campaign was so good.

back now for sfc3, gone when bored...only to pay visits instead of posting.

so infact someone with 6 months here could be more valued because they may be a modeller, and contribute something tangible. i contribute nothing but discussion on the game.

Peace.

Thanks,

jd

Also personaly I dont care a great deal over what is said or felt about me I wont cry. However its always nice to hear nice things!

user ratings of others does work, take a look at the slashdot forums.

Agreed.  That seems to be the point all along, from most users--many users of this UBB can handle and dish out flames/punishments/jokes/what-have-you.  Of course, there are a few exceptions.  Over the years, that has been the trend.  But, then again, how would I know?  I'm just a died-in-the-wool n00b......pfffffffffffffffffft.  Stay cool.

Some people are not new but do have a new acount
I myself have had 3 acounts since 2000 and no I have never been banned a lot of people when they first sign up to the fourms use a fleet name or later on join a fleet (as in my case) then join another fleet and thus once again a new acount
