Can you have more then one copy of SFC3 on your system???
« on: February 22, 2004, 12:47:15 am »
Hey guys, I talked too someone on GSA a few nights ago who said you could actually have more then one copy of SFC3 on your hard drive.  Is this true???  I would really like too see if this can be done because I use the GAW mod (Generations at War) but I want too replace some of the Fed models in the mod.  I like many of the models that Nanner included in the GAW mod, but some of them (Especially some fed models) are extremely high in poly count and I would like too swap a few of the models from unmodded SFC3 into my copy of GAW too help out my system (like for example, the Galaxy, Soverign, and other ships that are heavy in polycount).

Anybody know if you can actually put more then one copy of SFC3 on a system and able too play both?

I'm just curious why you didn't just try it without having to ask...    ....just put it in a different folder.

From my understanding of things, you don't even have to do a separate install to use different models. You may need one to get the stock models, but after you substitute them, you can delete the plain vanilla install. That will save you some hard drive space.

Hey guys, I did what that link provided by NuclearWessels, and it seems too be working on my system.    But I got a question or two.  I decided too intall two types of mods on my system.  The First one is just your standard SFC3 (unmodded) and the other is Nanners GAW mod.  I was hoping that I could used the Unmodded SFC3 for GSA gameplay only (since most people on GSA are unmodded) and use the GAW mod for when I want too play single player and server play with Nanners GAW mod.  According too the directions by NuclearWessels link, I use the "Start/Run" setup too change mods (I guess?).  So if I want too just play some good old fashion, unmodded SFC3, I just use this "Start/Run" setup where I have the unmoded SFC3 located and load Unmodded SFC3, correct?  Will this mean when i go too GSA that it should load SFC3 unmodded?  And vise versa if I want too play online in the GAW server.

Also, one last question?  I hadn't noticed this before (because I never played SFC3 (unmoded) on a server before), but their where a TON of servers too choose from with unmoded SFC3.  Why do I see a ton of servers in unmodded SFC3, yet I only see a couple when i load the GAW mod?  Anybody got know why?

If you want to use both versions online, then you have a few options. You can copy the SFC3 folder, place it right next to the original, or anywhere else that you like, and rename it (GAW for example).  Then you could do it the easy way, by going in to the newly-named GAW folder, finding the SFC3.exe file there (it looks just like the icon that your original install put on your desktop), right-click it, select "Send To", then select "Desktop (Create Shortcut)" and left-click that. This would put another SFC3 shortcut on your desktop, with a name like "Shortcut to SFC3". To avoid confusion, just rename that icon to GAW, and you are done. Just launch the appropriate file by clicking on its shortcut and have fun.

There is also the Server Profile Manager, which I use to switch between multiple modded and unmodded versions. The bonus, It saves several hundred MB of hard drive space per install. The drawback, it takes a few minutes to create a new mod profile, and to switch between profiles. Those drawbacks are greater the lower your processor speed, and amount of RAM on your computer.

If you want to download the Server Profile Manager, developed by the Temporal Alliance Group, I believe that The kind folks at  Battleclinic still have it up for download.
