Thu11s, where arrrre yooouuuu?!
« on: August 13, 2003, 09:53:14 am »

I have been trying to reach Thu11s. About a week ago or so, I sent an email asking permission to modify some of the FeralYard models to create some additional variants, such as the OmniHawk, MegaHawk, Gorn Tug, etc..
.. but got no response.

.. and I have created them. Except, how bad would it be if I included these in my mod and made them available on my website? I haven't gotten an answer to the emails.

MegaHawk. SFB Module R7:
An additional 2 SparrowHawk engines were installed onto a Hawk-series hull. This ship is very much like a KillerHawk, except it's heavier. It's a DN, and sports the same plasma complement as a KHK: 1xR, 2xS, 2xF. It has never been built, but the design included many variants, since it's modular.

OmniHawk. SFB Module R7:
1 Additional SparrowHawk engine was installed onto a Hawk-series hull. This ship is considered a "Light DreadNought" and has a lighter movement cost. The PLaR has been replaced by a light PLaS, but like the MGH it's very modular and can sport many different SparrowHawk configurations.

Gorn Fleet Tug. SFB Module "Advanced Missions".
The rear "bubble" is an attachable pod. It can be a cargo pod, commando pod, battle pod, etc.. The pod is detachable, hence the no-pod model.

See what I mean? These things are good enough to be used/released.. but not with Thu11s' permission which he requests when you install his models.

Hey FireSoul:

I really like what you've done with Thu11s' models. I hope that he gets back to you soon with his blessing.

In the meantime, I was wondering (assuming Thu11s gives you further permission) if you would be willing to make a couple more variants of the Killerhawk and/or Firehawk.

Specifically, I always thought the two ships would be neat in "lighter" versions as well, namely by removing the two nacelles on top of the secondary hull, thereby putting them in a class between Heavy Cruiser and Light Cruiser. Just a thought (hint, hint).

Heh.
Nah. I'm just trying to create models for ships in my mod that are distinctively different than the models I am currently using. This is why I have been working on tugs and such. (previous posts) I suggest you get the trial version of 3ds, and the R4 plugin module to be able to import/export .MOD files. You could do that variant fairly easily enough.

.. y'see.. since I have been using his models as part of my mod (I asked permission for redistribution).. it only makes sense that the models for tugs and such match his. Between that and shiplist corrections I'm doing, I don't have much time to answer requests that aren't on the list.

List?
.. I am thinking redoing the HLTT, LLTT to match his stuff, starting off by modifying his models. Also, I'm thinking of adding in a more accurate HTUG based on his Ranger model. There's also a question of preparing a proper GDND (Destroyer Dreadnought) from a modified HDD (just like the SSD)..

Hey, that's cool. I figured it couldn't hurt to ask.

I have absolutely NO expereice in modeling but I'd like to give it try. Relatively simple stuff like removing engines or replacing pparts with other part (like changing out bridge modules, etc.).

Would 3ds and the R4 plugin be good for a novice like me?

If so, hwre could I download them? Do they cost anything?

Thanks!

Pretty cool Firesoul!

Gorn destroyer dreadnought? Sort of a TNG Defiant  for the Gorn? Sounds very interesting! RE: the Romulan Omni-Hawk and cousin, (NOT a criticism) don't you think the extra engines are a little overkill? Then agian the stock Taldren KBB/KDNs were off on their engine counts too, LOL!

I'll try to get ahold of Thulls for you.

Qapla!

As stated: Front end is a G-HDD, rear end is tail part of a DN. Failed experiment, too high of a stress level when maneuvering about...

5*8warp and 6*8warp, sounds DN level to me.

The R4 plugin is for 3ds Version 4 (or higher, it seems to work fine with current R5).
I will have to look around for the download links. I don't remember where I got the tools.
3ds:  http://www.discreet.com/products/3dsmax/. Look for the trial version.

Ok, besides that, what other plugins would I need?

really the only tools you need are Max, and the r4 plugin.  If you want to do some textures of your own, then you'll need an art program.  A lot of people use Paint Shop Pro, because it's much cheaper than PhotoShop, but those are the two major programs for creating textures that I've seen around.

I use Paint Shop Pro 5.0 (latest version is 7.0) because its extremely cheap compared to the newer version.  I only payed like 20 bucks for it www.half.com, while the 7.0 version is like 100 bucks.  Paint Shop Pro has just about all the tools you need in order to make bitmaps for the models.  Although Photoshop is used extensively as well and has tons of capabilities, I find the program difficult to use and PSP is much easier to run on lower end systems because the system requirements are much less then in Photoshop.  Also, if you get a copy with a manual, its much easier to use then Photoshop in my opinion.

I agree with that, although I bought v6 and 7(cheaper because I bought 6).  With photoshop it was like pullin' teeth to get anything done.  I was always fighting the program, and just couldn't get the effects I wanted.  I slipped fairly easily into PSP.  On the other hand my cousin is very prificient in Photoshop, and he does some pretty impressive stuff every now and again which makes me want to go learn that, but it just never works out for me.

The Gorn will probably look weird.
.. as for the Romulans above.. They're accurately drawn. You should see the SSDs..
.. yes.. that's 6 engines! :P~

Here's what I think the final result of the GDND will look like. It's the front of the HDD, with a .. ..a.. a big rear.

The G-DND is from SFB Module R10. The Gorn Confederacy made a single failed prototype. It couldn't handle motion stress: the design called for the warp engines to be attached to the HDD's hull instead of the sturdier DN rear. This design could be used in an emergency, but don't depend on being able to withstand HETs. (HET success: 66% for 1st HET. 33% for following HETs.)

 Compare with thu11s' normal GDN
 Compare to his unmodified GHDD

Tomorrow I merge the parts, ..etc..etc..
.. Question! .. what's the best way to merge parts together without blowing away the textures? I use "collapse" and it causes havok to the textures.

Kaenyne,

For about 25 bucks, if you want to use it past 30 days, you can use MilkShape for kitbashing. The plug ins you need can be found on this forum as well as the link to milkshape. It will let you build models as well as kitbash and apply textures to  them. If you have a scanner installed you also already have a basic version of paint shop. It is enough to see if it is something you want to get into with out the 300-1500 dollar investment in the professional programs.

Firesoul,

PLEASE, consider Thu's Hydrans for submission as well. They would make wonderful LATE era entries...

I think you should consider adding them instead of the Taldren ones all together (he he he)

Ok, I just loved Thu's Hydran models. That Hydran PF wasn't too shabby too. Any chances it gets on the act as well?

please consider the Thu's Hydrans. They would made excellent additions-replacements.

I am thinking late era, and the use of the Fast Boat...

But anyway, do consider them..
Thank you
