Are you asking if you can have three or four PC's connected to a home router (eg Linksys BEFSR41) and be accessing a D2 server somewhere else on the internet? If so then the answer is no.

I believe there is a way to set up a D2 server on the internet, and only allow the PC's on your side of the router to play.

I have OP on two machines hooked through a linksys router - my son and I play quite a bit, mods and all...
Works fine..

How do you have the port forwarding arranged?

To play via LAN you don't have to forward ports, you have to make sure that the two machines can share files before you try to play a game. One is the game host, the other goes into TCP and selects Local Area Network as the place to join a game.

We don't play the D2 much if ever so that's not a factor. I think if a 3rd machine was in on the game it would work the same way. Each Machine can have ports forwarded to allow for the D2, I don't know which ones.

I think the person in need is asking about multiple clients to the net.

Hence my request for how the port forwarding is configured. It would be very important for somebody to describe how to have two or more players inside a router connect with full functionality to an external D2 server.

to have the response:

and then witholding the keys to the Holy Grail of DirectPlay networking was a tad disconcerting.

Sort of like dangling a frosty six pack in front of a thirsty man and saying "I've got mine, mate".

We cannot both connect and play on the internet at the same time, I was just stating that we can play LAN with no difficulty. I could never get 2 machines connected at the same time either.

never mind.

So far, I can get everything to work, but I can't host in GSA.

Cleaven I think EAW\OP were to soon for Direct play to be used.

I have gotten SFC3 to wrok correctly behind a Linksys router so my daugther and I could play SFC3 together on the D3.

Unfortunately the only way I ever manged to get EAW or OP up on two machine in a D2 was to use 2 IPs. SO as you know we are still screwed as far as I know.

Yes, it would be very good to see in a few years another game that makes the most use of DirectPlay 10 or so. The older (DirectX 7?) stuff is certainly not very friendly for a wired gaming community.

There are several good things about the latest game and the networking advances certainly are great. No arguements there.

Whiplash, these are my settings that let me use full use of GSA, D2 and D3. You will get warning messages on GSA though.

Configuration of LinkSys BEFSR41 for GSA and SFC.

Port range forwarding table:

47624 to 47624 TCP
2300 to 2400 Both
6667 to 6667 TCP
3782 to 3783 Both
27900 to 27900 UDP
28900 to 28900
29900 to 29901
6500 to 6515 Both
6073 to 6073 UDP
13139 to 13139 UDP

Don't use DMZ and make sure you have the latest firmware.

I think I may be one of the few people who did manage to play with 2 machines behind a firewall.. but I will admit that I used a PPTP tunnel to get an internal IP from elsewhere, and there set up portforwards for SFC too.

I had considered this method also. Setting up a direct link to my computer at work or a server that I montior and running the executable from that machine. I have enough bqandwidth it shold work. I just haven't had enough motivation to set it up. Much less explain why a Star trek game is sitting on a server.

instead, if you can PPTP to that machine and NAT/masquerade behind it, you can portforward the game to it. My personal record for SFC online gameplay at once was 4 players.
1- local portforard
2- portforard through neighbour. (he had a networking link to there too)
3- PPTP + forwarding
4- something that I wrote.. "PPP over SSH" which allows me, like PPTP, to get a remote IP using between 2 linux boxes.

Yes, I'm doing it.

Forward the ports to the server, place the Gaming PC in a DMZ (intall a software firewall for protection).

The curious thing is when you log into the D2 server on your network, it logs you local IP.

I have a LinkSys BEFSR41 router. I know I have to open the ports you specified for D2 play, but I have problem. I have no Idea how to open these ports. How do I do this, Cleaven? Lend me a hand, please. This could be my breakthrough to getting on D2 for good without any problems!!! Please reply as fast as you can. I have been trying for about a year to figure this out, but if tell me how to open the ports, I won't have to go asking around anymore. Please help. If you want to tell me how to open these ports in private my e-mail address is militaryman@hotmail.com. THANKS!!!

Oh and by the way Cleaven, I've got a firewall so I am not sure about switching these ports around. In you next post on this thread can you also tell me if it will affect te firewall on my computer in any way or if it will turn it off? Thanks again.

If you are behind a router's firewall you should turn off your software firewall while playing. They cause too many problems. The router's firewall should keep you secure enough.

Regarding configuring your router, you would have to know how to access it with your web browser.
Enter 192.168.1.1 as the address. This is the default value unless you have changed it. This will get you to the login screen. You need to know the password to get in. You also need to look at your manual to see how to get to the page that allows you to enter the ports that need to be forwarded. It's under the advanced options.
