WIP: Asia class (Constitution precursor)
« on: July 31, 2003, 09:26:50 pm »
Just started work on the Asia class from SFM. Obviously it's the class that inspired the Connie...I like it!!

Here's some pics of the mesh so far...just needs a few details and she's ready for the paintshop, lol.

Looks good so far!  I guess you're going to refine the various parts of the ship?

Oh and pleeease follow Masao's original schematic, the Bernd Schneider 'revised' one just makes the ship look fugly IMO.

Mesh looks good so far but don't be afraid of using more polies, things like the rear end of the engineering hull that thingamajig on the back end of the saucer (don't know the tech name for it) really look like they could do with some more detail.

Asia was a little science ship, the real precursor to the Connie was the Valley Forge cruiser, which IMO looks a lot better than the Asia, much more streamlined; as aesthetically pleasing as the connie, but a significantly different design.

(Not the Connie, Valley Forge, or Asia, was bored )

I'm happy to see that someone else is tackling the Asia Class. I have a soft spot for her ever since I discovered the ship at Starfleet Museum. To me she looks most like the Constitution's immediate ancestor.

And she is quite a good looking ship. Of note: I have seen at least 5 variations of the ship (4 preTOS and 1 TMP) but the most recent version at Starfleet Mueum look the best IMHO.

If you're interested, there the updated (TMP era) version is at Ex Astirs Scientia (please excuse the spelling) It is called the Asia Refit. Also typing in Asia Refit in Yahoo! will make it easy to find too...

Good work!

I'm just going by the pic at SFM...but I'll chk out the other versions too.

Added some more details...the deflestor dish and the shuttle bay notably, and did a little texture work.

Hope you like:

Very nice. Looking much better already.

You've obviously got the skills!

Thanx Kaenyne!!

As for going with more polys, it's already over 4000, but I'll see what I can do.

Looks good, but everything seems too bulky to me, maybe it's the angles of the pictures but the dorsal neck looks way too wide (from front to back, the thickness is fine) and it should be much more slanted forwards, it seems almost upright. The engineering hull looks waaay to big, really seems out of proportion with the saucer oh and the nacelle support struts should be really thin and angled more like the TMP Enterprise.

This: http://www.starfleet-museum.org/asia-masao2.jpg is Masao Okazaki's version, which IMNSHO is the better of the two.

This: http://www.starfleet-museum.org/asia-old-logo.jpg is Bernd Schneider's adaptation for his EAS Fleetyards, both appear in the Asia's history at the top of the page, your version looks like a weird hybrid.

Well, I'm doing it from the 2nd pic...dont really see the "wierd" hybrid part, as my 2ndary hull is akmost exactly like the pic I'm using...and the neck, if you notice, follows the parameter of being proportionately equal to the saucer. Maybe you don't see it because you're admittedly partial to the 1st pic? Anyway, that's why this is a WIP, and there are many refinements still to be made. I might just do the original one too though, as it looks prety good too.

Might not get much done for a day or three...my b-day is tomorrow, and I have the blender ready, tequila and margarita mix...mmmmmmmmmmmm, mmmmm! Happy bday to me!! And yes, it's a new blender so I had to test it, make sure it worked, then I couldn't let the stuff go to waste, now could I?LMAO

LMAO dude, happy B-day man, have a great one.

The ship is your ship so if you wanna do the second one then it's cool, as I said I just prefer the first one.

Did a little more texture work. One question: You think I should lighten up the base layers? Seems a little dark to me.

Heres a few pics:

Looks really nice Sandman.  Heck, I think it looks better then the Constitution in some ways.  I like what you did with the panelling too.  I'm trying to learn that technique so that I can improve my models textures better too.

She's looking quite excellent!

She's gonna look great flying next to her big sister Enterprise.
