I've been playing SFC3 for sometime now and I think the Ion cannons might be a tad too powerful in my opinion.  Granted, I mostly play Fed and Romulan and don't hardly play Klingon a lot, but those Ion cannons are murder for everybody.

I was looking at the specs today for this heavy weapon, and although at first I thought maybe reducing the damage output of this weapon might be the answer, I think that is unwise.  Klingon Disruptors and Torps don't usually have good chances of hiting (most torps don't anyways) so the only beam weapon the Klingons got is the Ion cannon.  But I think this weapon, as it is now, is just a little to powerful.  The max damage for it is 14 points, and its max range is only 20, but it is far more acurate then the Medium Plasma (which has a max damage of 15 normally).  I think what could make the Ion Cannon much more balanced is not reduce the damage out put, but increase the power draw to 12 points instead of 8 as it is now.  If I recall, don't Ion cannons have a special effect of killing your crew members easier then other weapons?  If so, that more added power to the weapon.  Just think about how powerful these babies are when overloaded???  If you increased the power draw to 12, it makes it hard to overload this suckers so much unless you don't load so many on ships or you just rely on Ion cannons.

So, do any of you guys agree, or not?

The problem is...in an unmodded game, klink vessels have 2 heavy weapons firing forward max.

Roms and feds have 3 (on their best vessels). This means the klinks dont get as much heavy weapon firepower.

Anyway, the ion cannon has short range AND dissipates...so no i dont think its too powerful. Especially since klink disrupters are no more powerful than fed phasers.

The Ion Cannons couldn't hit the broadside of a Cube...

And just which side is the broad side of a cube?

(unless you really meant broadside, which you couldn't hit anyway)

I'm sorry guys, but I still think those Ion Cannons need balancing.  Also, who cares if the Klinks have less heavy weapons then the Feds or Romulans, I'm talking about the weapon itself and comparing it too other weapons in the game.

Your right, the Ion Cannon disipates fairly quickly over long range, but since Klingons usually decloak close to you anyways, its hardly used at long range.  but the Ion Cannon is more effective then even Plasma Torpedos and is just plain devestating at short range.

Ok, I will admit that I play Romulan a lot, and they are still pretty weak (better though) even after the beta patch, but I still think the Ion Cannons need balancing.  Not much, just a little.  I think etheir extra power draw (10 or 12 points) or make the weapon have more mass is needed to balance the weapon out.
