The TOS era Belknap class.
« on: July 31, 2003, 08:46:03 pm »
Mesh is mostly done.

I wanted a different bridge than the connie so I went with the Phase 2 bridge module.

For a while I was considering what to do with the area at the bottom of the unusual engineering hull where the pylons meet.  Then I was trying to figure out what to do with the heavy weapons suite that the Battlecruisers have in the sec hull.  They I thought of the old reeses peanut butter cup commercial.  "You got chocolate in my peanut butter!  You got your peanut butter.....yada yada"

Anyway since the ship is kind of radical I went with a radical thing and put the heavy weapons down near the junction of the pylons too.  Some federation design to move them further away from the deflector dish and planetary array so that when the versions with Plasma's launch the torps won't interfere with the workings of the other systems.  Or something like that.  At least that's my story and I'm sticking with it.  It's hard to see but I have a recess in the front of that assembly on the bottom for the torp/whatever launchers.

I'm probably going to put a shoulder on the top of the sec hull around the neck like the tmp ships have only it won't have a forward weap launcher in it.  But if I do that I'll probably put a weaps hardpoint at the back of it for a rear firing torp, a drone launcher whatever.

ideas?

My favorite Federation battlecruiser.

I'm so happy. I kid you not.

Ideas? Oh shoot, I dunno. Locate a heavy weapon and a phaser hardpoint there for that option? Weak idea but it's late for me. I hope you out do yourself on this one.

Cool, I probably won't be here when you finish it (goin on holiday) but I bet it'll be fantastic as usual.

So is this like, the Decatur class? I saw some side views of it on shipschematics and it basically looks just like a TOS Belknap.

Yup, I got one Atrahasis did based off of P81's 3rd version connie, the port nacelle texture is reversed but other than that it's fairly cool, also he did an Ascension light dreadnought which is basically a Belknap with 3 nacelles and some other minor stuff, extra phasers and modified bridge module. I could send 'em your way if you want them, what email should I send them too?

A TMP Belknap? A TMP Belknap? ,,, he,he,he,he why yes! Yes there is. The other big A did it. There may be some P81 in there. I forget. I think it is the perfect CB. And I liked it sooo much that I sometimes make up specs for a CBR and a CBX just for fun. I can't make up my mind which is my all time fav model but it's among them.

I think you can pick up a copy at Starfleet Universe. Shoot, I think there is another one there by Moon.

Although it probably won't apply to your Belknap, since you have the bug to make your warps as perfect as possible, that suggests the earlier no do-dad sphere on the exausts version. Oh bother eh?

Funny you should mention that.  I was cruising thru some mods in the mod viewer in Feb or March and when I loaded up the old version of this I did a double take.  "Where the hell are the balls at the end of the nacelles?"

What's up with me texturing them in?

He he he. Ya maybe but I'm still glad you did that one. I dropped a set of Moon's textures on her to make it match my model set a little better. I even emailed you the results as an act of appreciation. I used to have a life now I have a computer and SFC.

Anyway, the comment was just a friendly tweak cause I know it will bug you at some point or another. Now that you have the late revision nacelles done you know there will come a time when ya just gotta do it. Or it's gonna stick in your craw slowly eating away at your sense of order. It will call to you in the night... but Anduril, where are my early nacelles? Don't you love us anymore? I don't have globe thingies! BTW, I've been looking at some of your later texturing results and I have to say they are really u-bangy good.

PS. If something sticks in ones craw, exactly where is that?

Thanks Bernard.

As has been pointed out numerous times we are no p81...which means I don't bump my own posts too!

  nya nya Rick.

Anyway, playing around with stuff now as most of the main things have been added.  I haven't gotten around to the pylons yet however.

Oooo, aaaah. I like the impulse engines. I have a thing for impulse engines. One of my fav things to do is give the illumination map color and give them a cherry red glow behing a grayish grid plate. It isn't noticable till you catch them at the right angle but I like it.

And that weathering fade from the seams is very sharp. Compliments on those little things you do.

I have a question re the "rust" on the nacelle shields: How can you have oxidation in space?

Re: The TOS era Belknap class.
« Reply #22 on: August 07, 2003, 08:11:49 am »
Not sure about release time as I get about a half an hour a morning to work on it lately.

Who's to say it's oxidation?  This bit of detail comes off of Ed M's bastardized refit of the E that hangs in the Smithsonian.

I kind of write it off this way.  Maybe whatever equipment is in those things generates some kind of field that attracts certain elements in space.  Which happen to be brownish.....    Anyway it looks cool and gives the illusion of past movement!

Here's where I am at the moment.  Trying to decide if I want these horizontal lines around the saucer sides.  I may finalize them as double lines.  If I were to do that and I'm leaning toward it should I remove the vertical lines betwee them.?

Excellent work, sir! I can't get enough TOS designs, and this will be a cherry edition to my collection. It's begging to fill the CF slot in Firesould's shiplist...

I'm no modeler, just a fan, but I like the horizontal lines, from a distance I think it will give the saucer a nice, clean edge. And the vertical lines look great, ya gotta have plate seams, and those look great as is.

I suppose my only quibble would be the NCC number, heheh.

Anywho, my $.02

Well, since you asked... I assume there are yet to be drawn port holes/ windows. Mmmm, kill them. Under the theory that less is more. Perhaps a slight change in hue or tone of a band between window groups. That and may I venture the deflector dish needs something. I trust your judgement. I'm sure the finished Belknap will have exactly the understated render with a couple of touches that will make it fun. Like the structure at the base of the neck. Very cool.

I look forward to it Anduril. You make good voodoo with the models

Updated the last pic.

There are windows along the edge of the saucer in the same configuration and location as the Constitution class.  The camera just happens to catch the saucer between the two groups.  When I get near the end of this build I'll decide if I want to change the configuration and or number of windows.

Perfecto! I knew you would come up with it. Looks like it was supposed to be that way all along.   Something that closely related to the Constitution class is gonna be something you have a good feel for.

Should they ever get a bug to do Star Trek 'TOS revisited' as a TV series then may you be an artistic project consultant. If they can do four seasons on a Constitution perhaps they can come up with another four on a Belknap.

Atra, maybe it was due to that one time some enemy weapon got through the shields just enough to "oxidize" some oxidizable metallic component in the plating!  Don't you remember TOS?  The shields were always failing like NYC public schools!

Been adding the little things lately.

Yesterday was a wash as it was a day of beer and volleyball.  I'm getting too old for the volleyball....ack.

This is a quickie head on shot I took while I was cleaning up the mesh ship in .mod format.  I still have one or two shadowing issues to take care of as well as finalizing the saucer top/bottom textures and making illum maps.

I'll be looking for her. What ever it is with the Belknap I think it is really sharp looking. Like a favorite car from years past. (eg. 69 Camaro) Take your time as it will probably be the final edition of an ellegant design.

Man-oh-man!  Anduril!  This is almost like going back and watching THE show for the first time!  And that date, '64!  Ah, what sweetness, then!  Though I know you know that it was '66 when it actually debuted.  Great days then- 'toons, toys, and Trek... oh yeah, still had to go to school though.

Will we ever see another space program as vigorous as we had then?

I was going to edit out some of the first pics to save dl time but whatever edit timer kicks in kicked in.

Not really sure if I like the bussards.  But that may be due to the lighting which was a quick run thru to see what the results would be and to get a base look to start with.  There are a few things I see need changing and a couple to be added.  But it's in mod form with break/dp/hp's etc so only a few tweaks remain.

I like it.

Gee, I wished your site was fleshed out with the download links. You have so many well crafted models that it seems out of place for them not to be there. The Belknap is going to be yet another prize for the game. And may I say I'm really impressed with the way the saucer rim came out. Whatever the three protrusions are that surround the deflector dish are supposed to be, do you think there ought to be some sort of function for them? Like scanner imagers or nodes for shaping the deflector field? They strike me like they are supposed to do something but I don't remember it ever being described in a schematic what they do. Just a thought.
