Topic: I'm sure I'm being incredibly stupid, but how do you get to a game? (Read 1712 times)

I rarely played multiplayer before, due to a lousy connection, but I swear to god I successfully did so on occasion. Now that there's a patch, and I have DSL, I'd like to try my hand against real people on a regular basis, but OP insists both of the main multiplayer systems have to go through Gamespy Arcade, and seems to be insisting I get a subscription before doing so..

I seem to remember the game populating with different servers before, showing ongoing campaigns you could join, on any given side - have I gone senile, or do I need to change a firewall setting on a specific port in my DSL modem, or am I just to bloody stupid to be allowed into mutoplayer?

I'm running OP 2.5.4.10, under XP, through a Homeportal 1000S DSLmodem, with a firewall set for high security - is there a specific port I need to open somehow?

You need a Gamespy account to play on GSA or the D2. It costs nothing for the basic service, which just lets you get on and play, no frills. On the lead in screen to the D2 server list there is a section that asks if you want to create a Gamespy account. Press yes and follow the steps. Say no to any memberships or subscriptions and set up a basic account if that is all you want. As far as I know, you have to turn a firewall off to play, but there may be a way around it. I'm not the one to answer that.

Nevermind - I got it finally - I was having an interaction between the XP firewall and the homeportal hardware firewall.

I feel stupid now - it wasn't that difficult, I just don't know networking well enough to check for that right away.

Configuration of LinkSys BEFSR41 for GSA and SFC

Port range forwarding table:

47624 to 47624 TCP
2300 to 2400 Both
6667 to 6667 TCP
3782 to 3783 Both
27900 to 27900 UDP
28900 to 28900
29900 to 29901
6500 to 6515 Both
6073 to 6073 UDP
13139 to 13139 UDP

Don't use DMZ and make sure you have the latest firmware.
Also disable UPnP on your router.

Now where else would you get that kind of support? I logged on to a free game service, wanted download Great Naval Battles and did not know it was still available commercially, thus it was not available for download. My response from people in the chat forums to my questions? Basically a "You are a stupid M/F and F you!" What a nice experience...
