Newbie, How do you gain territory?

I was screwing around with the borg and when I knock out all of a planets defenses the level just ends, can you gain any territory?  It's SFC III by the way.

The game is broken and unti la patch fixes it, you cannot get promoted or gain territory.

You will notice that the Stardate gets stuck and never changes, thus does not allow the game to progress in a normal manner.

So basically theres no point in playing this game until its fixed.

This is true

This is NOT true. You definately *CAN* gain territory. You don't, for the most part, gain territory INSTANTLY though, which is probably what you are expecting.
There is something called a hex Defence Value (DV). It has to be reduced to zero for the hex to change ownership. If you keep being successful in attacking a particular hex, it will eventually happen.

I beg to differ, but to each his own

I dont think you can gain territory like your suppose too, yes some territories do change but with the game being broken I dont think territory progression is happening correctly.

And you are right to each his own, I just dont like wasting my time not being able to progress thru the game correctly.

I am not going to bother playing the game until the patch come out, I dont want to be burned out on this game by the time its actually working.

I am just trying to prevent you from being dissatisfied with the results. As far as I know, the patch WILL NOT address this, because it is a non-issue.
In other words, the Defence Value of a hex is a fundamental design piece. There are ways to lower the DV, there are ways to raise the DV. Both involve playing missions and winning them of course. When the DV reaches zero, the hex 'flips'. This is how the game is designed, this is how it works, in D3. You can login to any server and ask around.

I seriously doubt that the patch will make a successful planet attack an instant hex-flip mission, regardless of the DV.

I never said hex's are suppose to instantly change, I said that I dont think that hex progression to a lower DV value is functioning correctly.

And not to even mention the single player campaign that does not work that I am waiting to be fixed so I can play that as well.

I am a beta tester for Bethesda(Morrowind) and to me this game(SFCIII) should never have seen the light of day in this condition. I have played games in Alpha stages that are not as broken as SFCIII....that is a very sad and telling fact.

I have had a hex contaning a planet flip to become my territory without any problems...the problem that I do have is that the planet does not become mine...it remains neutral at all times and the planetary assault mission is always there, no matter how many times I attack the planet it just wont become mine...I have tried to beam all my marines down to capture it and it still wont turn, is this suppose to happen?

If the hex is yours, the planet is yours. The fact that it is 'neutral' on the attack screen is irrelevant. For all practical purposes, you own the planet, since you own the hex. You can use planerary facilities (shipyard etc), you get repairs, and so on.
In fact, its even better that the planet is neutral; you can keep attacking it, for more pp, free and automatic repairs immediately after battle, and a DV boost!
