New OP Arcs? Please List
« on: July 24, 2003, 10:32:17 am »
Who here can list (accurately) all the new firing arcs that were included with the latest OP patch? They don't appear to be in the patch notes, and don't occur on stock shiplist ships, so modders really need a list of the arcs with a description or picture of their covered area and the shiplist spec abbreviations needed when assigning them to a weapon.

Thanks in advance.

I thought it was that one arc got fixed (LWX?).  I didn't know any new arcs were added...

FALX/FARX -> FAL/FAR + right down rear
LSRF/RSLF -> LS+RF / RS+LF missing arcs
RRP/RLP -> Rear plasma arcs good for some tugs and HDWs.
LR -> L+R arc used on the Hydran Fire Support Pallet

Interesting that the LR passed through, considering the only ships that would use this had to pick one side or the other, and couldn't use both -- or am I wrong about that?

Thanks for the list. This should help spec modders a lot.

I never saw such a restriction anywhere..
.. and the only ship that I saw that uses LR was the Hydran Fire Support Pallet.

PS. The UI graphics will be incorrect.
PPS. These arcs are used in OP+ 2.2

It's really nice of Dave/Taldren to include arcs that the stock ships in the game don't even use. Very thoughtful

FS, I thought the ship description on the the L/R firing pallet stated that it was one or the other, chosen by the player at the start of the scenario. It was intended to orbit a planet and bombard. I'll have to look it up when I get home -- maybe I'm thinking of something else.

No, you're right.  It's right or left but not both.  But it's really not a big deal to have it fire to both sides.

Cool, well there we go then. You may have had the wrong reason, but it's still a good arc. Besides, modders could do some interesting things with it.

I was wrong about them being used against planets, though -- R9.23 says it was designed to assist in attacking bases. The player had to decide the arc before the scenario started, and then declare it when the first hellbore was fired. Actually, it's not very clear if each hellbore could be fired in a chosen direction, or if all of them had to point the same way.

 I don't see it as a big issue if they are allowed to use both sides -- just give it a slight BPV bump.

There have been a lot of thoughts on how to make Lyran and Hydran ships for D2 assault missions that could do the job, without making AI killers or PvP monsters out of them. The LR arc on a heavy tug might do the trick.

I don't know how many here are familiar with the simulator races. They aren't "real" SFB races. They're for training purposes to give you a ship with particular strengths to go against. Anyhow, there's a race called "The Britanians" that are based on old style sailing vessels to allow you to explore what tactics that you would use if you were sailing/flying them in the SFB Universe. They use L/R firing arcs and would probably fill the role of bombardment ships pretty well. At least they are already balanced with assigned bpv's and would give a good starting point to work from. Just an idea.

Oops! My bad. They don't use both arcs on the same hardpoint. They have some left weapons and some right weapons. I must be getting feeble.

well.. mod them in. Quick! someone make tallships models!

LOL. Next thing you know, we'll be modding SFC to be a real naval sim. Then maybe the pirates would become fearsome again!

Doug, I'd play that, been after a good naval (preferably WW2 era) for a long time.

Ahhh... the Briantians...

Think of ships that had a massive amount of weapons on them, firing either L or R, but not both.  The cruiser had 4x Disr, plus about 4xPh-I on EACH side.  Some Ph-3's firing fore and aft.

Big side shields, wimpy wimpy front and rear shields - say, 30 pt side shields and 15 point front/rear shields on the cruiser.

Oh, and they can't HET.

Wacked ships.  But fun.

I prefer the Frax.  Those could be done in SFC.  Um, think Klingon weaponry, but with either FX or RX firing arcs on most of their weapons.  Plus, they have submarines that have extremely close-ranged weapons they can fire while cloaked.
