A program called shipedit makes life easy.  I'm not sure where to get shipedit now. Perhaps I'll put up a mirror.

Based on your question I am considering a 'how to add a ship to EAW/OP' tutorial.

That would be pretty cool of you...I only play OP for the fact that me and my Fiancee like to play speed 11 fast games and so dont have the patch, they killed speed 11 in the patch...so am now open to modding OP...

I think it is pretty clear why OP got a bad rap.  The community felt screwed that they would have to shell out another 50 bucks for much the same content that could have been done as an add-on instead of a stand-alone.  Had they done the former everyone who plays EAW now would play OP.  Pretty simple I think. And as can be seen by the sales, the number of players, and the support for OP, Taldren made a big mistake.  C'est la vie.

Awesome post chris...

No is simply no excuse for not getting OP any more....I believe it's around $10.00 if you can still find it....

It amazes me all the hard work you put into these games. I've DL'd 6 or 7 of your mods, 3 CDs worth, and have enjoyed them a lot. Your TNG mods are the best IMHO, but all of them are really good. I say this even though I'm an TOS fan. I'm glad there are people like you and the modelers out there. You keep the game "tons of fun".

Lepton this is indeed the reason. The Modding community embraced OP. The EAW community did not take to OP so easily.

This mod can be found here:

http://sfc.strategy-gaming.com/chrisjonesmods/TNGOP.shtml

it has many parts, but once assembled is a bunch of fun..  and I found Shipedit here on Starfleet Universe:

http://www.strategyplanet.com/sfc/editing.shtml

I am finishing up a new SFC3 add-a-ship tutorial this week, after that I'll do up an EAW/OP version.

I, for one, can't understand why everyone didn't port over to OP when it came out.  I know some people were upset and felt they were getting bilked on a stand-alone expansion pack, but that wasn't a majority.

OP is a better game than EAW.  It was more stable than the current EAW patch on release, it had more ships, a new era, new races.  I know a lot of people said " everyone only plays 300 / 350 adv"... well, gee, that's no different than 200 late, and the ultra weak overdone 185 late.  You know what, there are other eras, and I never had a problem getting people to play mid early late matches.

I liked OP for the really cool lyr ships that were added.  The BCHP is a great match for the KHK in EAW, and now with that monster lyran at 220 in OP, it's a cakewalk!.

A few comments.  AcePylut, have you played OP on Game Spy ever?  I went out and bought EAW because:

1.  No one on GSA was ever playing anything but advanced era.
2.  There is and continues to be little D2 support or support of any kind for the title.

If the majority of people did not feel slighted by OP, then why didn't they buy it?  Answer:  they didn't want to shell out 50 bucks for much the same content they had payed 50 bucks for about a  year ago.  I in fact never bought EAW, had a friend's copy, so buying OP was my investment in the series. Whether they felt screwed or not is beside the point.  It did not make sense to them to do so, so they didn't.

If you go an GSA, there are like 10 people playing OP to the 40-60 on EAW.  If that is not an indication of sales and people's sentiments, I don't know what is.  My own personal experience on GSA with OP was exactly as you might expect.  I go into a room, play some adv era matches, and ask about doing some other eras.  Everyone says if you want that, go play EAW.  So I did.  Be that as it may, I hope people do go for OP, if we can get everyone over to it.  I myself bought OP at the full price and wish others would switch over.

Additionally, there is little or no D2 available for OP.  There are about 2 servers available, one of which requires FireSoul's OP+ refit shiplist.  That seems indicative of Chris' comments.  While modders go for OP, players go for EAW.

I don't dispute that OP has more to it, but I think you may be trying to justify your purchase with your claims about OP's good points.  The fact is the cost-benefit analysis at the time of OP's release led people to pass on it.  Perhaps now we can get more OP players as the initial investment is small.  However, I suspect that as the last patch for EAW is soon on the way, the last patch for OP is soon to follow.  Taldren's priorities are with SFC3 and unless they turn it over to Khoromag, I would expect little future support for the title.

Just my opinion.

Yeah, I play on GSA a lot, and used to fly in OP quite a bit (before I got my new pc last Sept).  ONly been in OP a couple of times since then.

I never had a problem playing Early/Mid/Late.  All you have to do is create your own room, and say "Early Mid Late Only".  You'd be surprised at how quick it would fill up.  And if you get a dolt that jumps in there and insists on 300 Adv, tell him to look at the room name.  He'll either play Ear/Mid/Late, leave, or whine.  If he whines to the point of annoyance - el kicko outta de roomo.

But, lately, there's never anyone in the OP room... I think the game is dead, as far as MP goes.

I don't know about your people. but in my memory.

OP WAS NEVER SOLD FOR $50!

It was $30 (expansion cost) straight off the shelf.

I cannot say why. But personally, I was really broke then. (I have since bought OP) but the fact is, for whatever reasons, not enough people bought it initially, and it never reached the critical mass it requires to start it up. (like SFC1 and EAW)

and Lastly, the patching efforts put into EAW by KhoroMag was not immediately available to OP (heck it's still not available.) hurts OP some what as well.

OP is the best sfc that no one played.

Chris Jones,

I see what you mean 3Dot. To put the men into a break mod would require a little model of them. What you see here is just a bmp. Very cool idea..

This idea was brought to life a year ago when Hollis J Wood did his escape pods. I'm not sure myself how to do it. I have escape pods in several models in the TNG Mod for OP.

Just wondering, is there a mod out there with this feature that I can download? I wanna see how its done.
