Topic: Romulan pre-TOS Cabbage Class WIP (Read 1569 times)

OK, figured I had to give the Rommy's some time, so I decided to go with the Cabbage Class from the Earth-Romulan War. When I went to get the specs to do a size chart for my other models, I wound up writing down just about all the ships at SF Museum.

I got a little involved, therefore making a list by year, race, class, crew, length and std./max. warp.

Now I have a list of ships to do.

They won't be in chronological order, mainly just whichever one catches my fancy at the time. One thing I noticed, was they have the Klink D-6 and D-7, Romulan Cricket and Fed Pyotr Velikiy and Constitution as pre-TOS...I'm going to place them as TOS since all can be seen in the series or were in service then as frontline ships.

Anyway, here's a few shots of the mesh, mostly finished.

For the registry, how about 73268...I was born in 68 so, why not?

The name I think should be...USS CHEROKEE.

No, not because I am or anything (Swedish, German, French, British

), but because I have always associated "bad ass" with the Cherokee Nation.

Back to this ship...anyone know where I can get good pic of the bird symbol the Rommys used back then? I'm gonna hate having to do it by hand.

Otherwise this should be easy to texture.

Sandman, if you rotate it -90 degrees, it looks like a man o' war... the jellyfish kind!

According to SF Museum, "CABBAGE" was the name given by Earth intelligence, but the men facing them in battle called 'em the "JELLYFISH".

That seems more appropriate to me.

I have never seen any pre-TOS Romulan ships.... being a fan of their designs, do you or anyone else have or can give me a reason why they started making their ships look like birds, from TMP onwards, and not earlier? Not that I dislike the Cabbage, it is waaaay cool; just lacking a little knowledge. If they lived there, and there were giant birds there with them, then what took them ''so long'' to start making their staships look that way? Just curious, not implying anything- you know me. Nice work matey!! Keep her going!!

Sorry, no idea.

Might be for the same reasons that Earth ships started out looking like capsules then progressed to the "current" design strategy. Remember, after the war, the Klingons tried to hit them a few times, but due to lessons learned and new designs, the Klingon ships were no match for them until the D-5 came out in 2224. Maybe it was found that manuverability(sp?) was improved, or a smaller frame was easier to cloak. A number of possibilities present themselves.

OK, should have this tonight. This has been fun getting all the info tigether. I think what I'm going to do is, after I get more of these done , start offering them as a ship pack. All in one zip. If you haven't looked yet, see my thread on the quick ref. chart I made. That is also a list of ships I plan to do. The more I do these ships, the more I like the pre-TOS era.

OK, did some texturing tonight, I don't know about you, but it seems a little dark to me. Suggestions, advice, I'm open to ideas.

Here's a look at what I have so far...matches the pics at SF Museum pretty closely.

Agreed, it looks dead/flat, like a car does before you paint it. I think you may want to add some aztecing and what looks to be some primitive form of sublight bussards as in the high poly CGI from the museum site:

Some shots also show the cannon barrels glowing, as well as the inside edge of the center beam. That might liven it up a bit too.

You're absolutely right starforce. I forgot all about those dang "bussards".

I'll be doing some more on it today...as well as re-visiting the Yorktown Carrier I started a while back (just need to finish texturing her also). Thanx for reminding me about those bussards. That should add just enough life to her.
