Netgear MR814 port forwarding?
« on: July 04, 2003, 10:51:27 am »
I figure I'd post this here since there's a better chance of running into someone with the same router... I can't for the life of me figure out how to port forward stuff like SFC3... and it kinda sucks pulling my cat5 cable out and hooking it up directly to the computer i'm on when i want to play.
Maybe i'm thinking of something else, but anyway, i have roadrunner's cable modem with dynamic IP's, so i'm not sure if that makes things more difficult or not.
if anyone knows how to port forward netgear routers, can ya help me out? I'd really appreciate it... oh, and a list of the ports that need to be open for SFC3 would be great to [and the other SFC's if you know them]
thanks

Basically you have to go into the router.  If you have it setup and controlling the Cable modem you already know how to do that.

Then armed with the port information, you have to set up the router so that information that comes in from the web on those ports is routed to your computer.  This means that say Port 80 (for example) is routed to IP address 192.168.0.2 (your computer) from 192.168.0.1 (router)

The 192.168.0.x  address is for LAN (Local Area Networks) only.  It is not used on the internet.

On my firewall router the services are set up first, and then the rules for them to work under are set separately.  (a little more complicated than regular gateway routers)

For example here are some entries for services.

  #  Name          Type          Ports (TCP or UDP)
  1  NWN           UDP                 5120..5130
  2  ICQ              TCP                1024..65534
  3  NWN1          UDP                     6500
  4  NWN2          UDP                    27900
  5  NWN3          UDP                    28900

You can see that ICQ has a single entry and is a range of ports.  NWN (Neverwinter Nights) has a range and then 3 separate ports for other things.  Also there is either TCP or UDP fpr port type.  The name is just an identifier as far as I know, the Type and port is what is needed.  In addition as stated before the ports have to have an IP to forward to.  This might be the same place in the setup or another place.

Unfortunately, I have found Netgear technical information marginal and confusing at best or nonexistant at worst.

Hope this helps some.  Maybe someone else can fill in some more holes.
