HOW TO DISABLE WINDOWS MESSENGER IN WINXP
« on: June 27, 2003, 01:13:31 pm »
For those of you that have winxp home and pro, i will explain how to disable it on a pernament basis. so that those annoying messesages will not appear ever again...note this may also be used on win2k and NT.

to do that, go to Start\Control Panel\Administrative Tools\Services, in there look for messenger, right click Messenger and go to properties and you will see Startup type. in the drop down menu select disable.

now you should no longer go those nasty popup messages while playing online.

any questions you can PM me and i will try to answer them...

WHOA!  I think a clarification is needed there, that's the internal windows net messenger vs the windows messenger that's an instant messenger.

Admittedly unless you are on a large scale network you shouldn't need this particular messenger (it's the equivalent of "net send"), but note that this is NOT the Windows Instant Messenger service!

To kill that, go find it and rename/delete its folder which should be here C:\program files\Messenger (you'll have to shut it down first before you kill it)

the net messenger is fairly unused except by.. say.. network printers or admins telling you that they're shutting  down the server for a bit.  Recently though spam has been coming through it (ie, an advertisement that looks like a windows error message box)... now if you want to kill that, then disable the windows messenger, otherwise it's probably best to leave it alone

MSN messenger is not what i am refereing to. messenger inside windows is what i am refering to. and it is safe to disable...it will NOT effect the functionality of the OS.
and yes, popup messages do come through when you drop your firewall to play on a dynaverse, GSA no need for that.

P.S. i am a PC TECHICIAN, so i do know what i am doing. i would not do anything to my own system if it was going to hurt it.

P.S.S.i have winxp PRO on my laptop and runs perfectly w/ it disabled. follow the instructions at the beginning of the thread you will not go wrong...

funny, i'm a PC tech too

I find with windows if you don't have a reason to disable something, it's probably safer not to (although I too have mine disabled).  Only broadband people need to consider this as I have yet to see anyone on a modem complain about getting spammed this way.

It was not an FYI to you, but to to everyone else as there has been a lot of confusion over the internal Windows Messenger and the IM over message boards when this spam started a few months ago.  MS for no good reason made the same name for both systems....

Vysander, i have a dialup modem and yes i did get those popup messages while in a D2 game and it is quite annoying...stopping messenger will not do it. because when you reboot guess what it will be running again. disabling it is the only option left...and yes maybe i should have made myself clear. sorry for the confusion...

to be honest that's not making any sense.  Someone is somehow spamming your ip address which is rotating everytime you dial up.  Are you sure you don't have hostile software on your system which is identifying you when you log in?

You know what's funny is that out of all those ads I was being bombarded with, most of them were for a popup blocker program,  I am glad I didn't buy the program, and found out how to stop it through AOL.  I love search engines, truly a wonderful feature.

Hey guys,

Disabling the pop up Messenger for Windows XP is essential for unadulterated play.

Go and have a look in the Dynaverse 3 Experiences forum for some helpful pointers on getting rid of those annoying commercial pop ups.

See you in space.

I found that with the stupid (yeah that is right) MSN Instant messaging service (similar to AOL's AIM and ICQ) I was having various weird problems.

Note: you can delete the folder and get rid of it without problems, ONLY if you have not set up e-mail or a few other things yet.  If you have Outlook Express setup for e-mail, the MSN Instant Messenger starts up with it.  I was always having problems with OE going into neverland when switching accounts after sending a message.

I fixed this by going into my registrey and turning off the MSN IM.

WARNING ! If you are not computer savy don't mess with your registry!

My e-mail seems to be much smoother now, and I don't seem to have other little problems that I was experiencing.  The MSN thing was rather pervasive and really didn't do anything.  (I use ICQ and have for years)

I used the following info and it worked in Win XP Home.

Remove Windows Messenger from Outlook Express (All Windows)

This tweak is used to remove MSN Instant Messenger functionality and integration from Outlook Express.

Open your registry and find or create the key shown below.
Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called "Hide Messenger" and set it according to the value data below.

Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.

Note: This tweak should also remove AOL Instant Messenger 5 integration.

  (Default) REG_SZ (value not set)
  Hide Messenger REG_DWORD 0x00000002 (2)

 HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express

Registry Settings
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Outlook Express]
Value Name: Hide Messenger
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (2 = remove messenger)

Disclaimer: Modifying the registry can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. We cannot guarantee that problems resulting from modifications to the registry can be solved. Use the information provided at your own risk.

As I said it really improved my Win XP in several areas.  E-mail and using one program I like for viewing various graphics files.  Also this program not being used saves on resources and memory.

ICQ, I can open, use and shut down.  It can be configured to do everything the MSN IM can but can also be set to not do anything unless wanted.  It doesn't load (per my config) at system startup.  I start it with a command.  I then also can shut it completely down when done.

Don't even start me on AOL  ( Blech!       )

This is the simple way, for those who dont know much about computers.

First if you have downloaded the yahoo tool bar, click on it and go down to "why am i still getting pop ups?" The n when the screen loads go down and click on the window messager link, you will have to download something from yahoo, and it will go to another screen and click on the button that says "Disable messager Service"

Its fast, easy, and you wont mess anything up
