EAW Mirak Campaign for OP bug in "What's so Funny?, Pt. 1"
« on: June 23, 2003, 03:06:18 am »
Ok, I'm almost certain I've seen posts about this particular mission that date back to before Orion Pirates was released and it was still just in Empires at War, but I can't find them, so here's the problem...

I go into this mission, and of course, the first thing is that you have to defend the local battle station against a Lyran attack. No sweat. Go through that just fine. Then I hail the planet and of course they tell me "Find the ambassador yourself. So I get to within distance 10(100,000km, IIRC) of the planet and engage my deep scanners. A short time later, my science officer reports having located the ambassador, and the script has me telling the transporter room to prepare beam him up, coordinates available from the science station. So I close to within distance 5.5, and go to the transporter controls. I beam up the only thing available that isn't a spare part and then nothing happens. It just sits there. If I leave the system, I lose the mission. What the hell could i have possibly done wrong?! I actually remember the same thing happening to me before i got OP and played the Mirak Campaign in EAW. I can't figure out why it won't work.

Note: The person icon I beamed up is identified as an infiltration team, and not as a diplomat. It even uses the infiltration team icon. I don't know if that's related to the problem.

the enemies never came. I have never gotten the result you just reported in the many times I have tested these scripts.

Enemies? No. I was talking about the Ambassador that you're supposed to beam up from the planet. I scan the planet for him, science says we have his coordinates, I beam him up from the planet, and then nothing else happens. He's supposed to brief me on the rest of the mission, tell me what the conference I'm transporting him to is. But nothing happens.

What am I doing wrong?

the reason the planet says they're busy is because of enemies. hm. I wonder why they're not there.

The Lyran ship I toasted? or are the enemies the infiltration team that I thought was the Ambassador?

I only got one Lyran ship to fight. I blew it up, then got told that the system was now clear. I wonder what gives. I hope this isn't one of those damned unreproducible bugs. Might it be that I need to keep the Lyran(s) a certain distance from the planet? Perhaps if someone had a walkthrough for this mission that I could look at it might help.

Playing as a Klingon the same thing happened to me.  It took about three times before everything worked properly.  I had a similar problem with the monster kids mission (I think it's called "playtime"?).  After scanning the asteroid and beaming the team over, nothing happened.  I did the mission about five times and finally the team reported back and the mission ended.  My actions seemed to have no effect as to whether it worked.  Sometimes you just have to play the mission several times before the final event will happen.

I just ran this mission to see what happens. I destroyed the Lyran ship first and then turned the scanners on the planet. I then proceeded to the planet to find and beam up the ambassador. After the ambassador is located,do not turn off the scanner and do not deselect the planet. Proceed inside range 6.0 and beam up. yes the ambassador does show up as an infiltration team. Worked for me on the first try.

Thanks for the tips on "What's so Funny? Pt 1." I'll try that.

I never had any trouble with "Playtime" myself. It always worked for me. Though I usually wipe out the child monsters before getting to the asteroid. I figure why let a baby astrominer and sunglider grow up to be adults to be hunted down later when I can get them befre they're a real menace. Also, I do scan the monsters themselves, And you should respond to them when they hail you.

Followup on "What's so Funny?, Pt. 1"

I finally was able to pass it afer repeated tries following the advice. And I think I figured out what might help. When your scinece officer tells you he's located the ambassodor and the script has you telling him to inform the transporter to prepare to recieve the ambassador, coodinates available from the science station, I waited for the deep scan to finish powering all the way up, then energized. I don't know if that had any effect whatsoever, but it might be the key element that nobody has realized. Anyone else notice that this helped them get past this mission?

Also, I'd like your opinions. What is the best place to drop off the Ambassador in Pt.2 when playing as the Mirak? The Hydran world? Or the Klingon? Obviously if you send him to the Lyrans, he's dead and you screwed up. Cause they say they'd love to have him...For lunch. The Klingons say they'll welcome him, but if it's a trap, the rest of your life will be short and painful. Finally, you have the Hydrans, who seem the most receptive. They sey they'd be happy to welcome your ambassador. Note, I tried this mission twice, sending the Ambassador first to the Hydrans, and the second time I sent him to the Klingons. Both ways I got 300 points, so I'm not sure it matters as long as you don't send him to the one Mirak world there, since it's pointless to send an Ambassador to one's own people.

I guess the question then is, does it actually help relations with the empire whose planet you put the Ambassador on?
