I successfully installed it and I got to the campaign menu but when I tried to start a mission, it just went back to the desktop for some odd reason.

no, it didn't say anything-just as soon as the normal "loading" screen would come up it just stopped and quitted.

It continually slays me how supposedly intelligent people abuse written english.   "quitted"  ?!

Anyway, if your notebook does not have a video card that supports 3D, SFC3 will not load.  I have a notebook with a 64meg Nvidia GeForce4 Go440 video in it.  (Toshiba for those interested)
It loads all my games without any problems.  For a number of months I used it as my desktop and it still can be used as one.

Anyway, if you have an older notebook that doesn't specifically have any kind of a 3D video support, you will just have to forget using it for SFC3.

To be honest my new desktop with a Radion 9800 was having trouble with SFC3 until I loaded the beta patch.  Was some kind of a driver incompatibility I am sure, but it would play the movie and then just CTD.
