Nebula mod download coming soon
« on: June 14, 2003, 09:31:43 pm »

These pics are all from the same mod. Small pics for faster load time

Oh yea, the Ship is the U.S.S. Bradbury. Conceptual design by Lance. Textures by Atheorhaven. Mesh by yours truly.

Nicely done! I thought adding the SFC3 space mod to SFC:OP was cool but what you are doing is so much better!

I love the blue dwarf binary stars. Any chance for a yellow star and a Red giant?

Are you also planning a 1:1 replacement for the space mod items? That would be cool.

Qapla!

Hi KF.  I was planning on releasing a 3 pack of these, then seeing if there was interest, I would keep at it until I run out of nebula's.  There are 32 space mods in all. I would love to replace them all eventually.

The 1st d/l will contain the binary suns and an orange sun. I can do a yellow sun later. I tried a red giant, but to make it big the textures looked to distorted.  So the red giant is a no go unless I find a bigger bmp of a sun somewhere.

The problem with releasing just 3 mods is that the game seems to pick them randomly. So to see the new mod, you might have to play 10 missions before it gets selected. If you wanted to see one right away. You could over write all 32 space mods with one of the new ones. Yes that is a royal pain but I haven't found a better way yet.

1 problem I have is a 2MB limit on space.  The full 32 mods would zip up at about 20MB. So I can release 3 at a time. Be sure to get them when I post em. As I  will have to rotate them out if I do more. Unless I can get them up at a yahoo club.

There is an easier way to make sure you see the new space mods.There is a gf file in the meta assets\singleplayer folder(something like that). In that file, there is something that looks like this:
// Space backgrounds used
[Backgrounds]
0                           ="space00.mod"
1                           ="space01.mod"
2                           ="space02.mod"
3                           ="space03.mod"
4                           ="space04.mod"
5                           ="space05.mod"
6                           ="space06.mod"
7                           ="space07.mod"
8                           ="space08.mod"

There are more(goes to 31).Just make sure the models are in the space folder and just replace the names

Hey James, instead of making zip files, make a rar file. You can compress more, split 'em up and so on...makes it easier with large files. I would offer to host, but still have a problem with files getting corrupted on d/l. Chk with me later...I might make a yahoo group just for us to use for d/l's...anyone who becomes a member that is.

Cool idea btw, good job.

Sandman I have a sfc club already. Was hoping to get this up where my pics are hosted but they wont take this file format.

Teeth, thanks for the tip. Its the MissionMatching.gf   Interesting cause in my file from OP patched to 2525, it only goes up to 15. Yet in the model folder it is numbered to 31. I wonder if this means that only half the mods are actually being used?

The story-a small space station with a crew of 6 was studing this star from orbit. Suddenly they lost there steering thrusters and there orbit is in serious decay. They sent out a distress call. Luckily the U.S.S. Bradbury was nearby. Even so the outside panels are already at 400 degrees. Cooling  systems are  offline. The Bradbury was just in battle and haven't finished repairs to there transporters yet. Will the U.S.S Bradbury arrive in time to rescue the stranding science crew?  Or will  they meet an untimely demise by the unrelenting sun?

Stay tuned next time the exciting conclusion. lol.

Bad news there.

A new development. I kinda only read half the copyright notice from nasa web site. The pics credited to NASA and the Space Science institute are considered free domain as long as credits are given.  But, they also have pics mixed in that are credited to other institutions.

It turns out I may have a few of these mixed in. Thus I would need to contact all said institutions for each pic. The readme would be a small novel.  So sorry to say I decided not to have a public d/l.  As all pics can be used for private use but not distributed unless all authors give permission.

Sorry,  my bad on this.

 Having said all that. These pics can be put into game fairly easily by just swapping out the bitmaps.
Sometimes reduction is necessary to prevent distortion. I always keep the final bitmap at 256 X 256 though. Simply paist the reduced nebula into a black background blank 256 map.

I discoverd that there are a number of hubble shots in the stock bitmaps of SFC2 space folder.  I wonder why there were never any credits regarding that or why I never have seen 1 in game.  The spacemods are numbered 00 to 31.

Yet in the missionmatching.gf which assigns them. Only 00 to 15 are listed. It could be that those others just were not enabled in this folder.

Even the Catseye nebula is there. (my favorite) though they washed out its green border.

I will try making a mod using the best of these hidden maps  incorporating my 360 starfield  which is completely my own.
This way I only have to credit Taldren for the textures and it could be put into a mod for the masses.

I kinda suck at making textures from scratch, but I am quite good at editing existing ones.

Good news I think. Modded Taldren's _sf_65.bmp into a sun. Not as good as my previous version above. (which actually is a pic of the sun) but I think it will do. I will also have this done in my binary blue version. So Yes Capt. Korah you can use this in your TNZ mod once I finish it up.  Isn't the TNZ mod for SFC3?  Cause this is for OP though maybe the file system is the same.

Likely will only have 2 done. So may not even be worth your while.

This is weird. Almost all the nebulas in SFC2 can be enhanced with color balance and saturation. The worst 2 would be the most popular. The catseye and the horsehead. Its almost like they had permision to use them but only if they  used 8 bit color and dirtied them up.

They can also be blended into black space better using gamma correction. But like I said the catseye and the horsehead are too far gone to recover.

Here is what the new sun looks like.  This is cool when your in a planet hex. You can have eclipses.

Korah you still want these couple mods now that they won't look as nice? If not I won't work on em-You can see real fast which stock nebs are the best using thumbnails in an editor. I'd just be taking the best and combining them all in 1 mod. For all I know its already been done.

The space backrounds in SFC3 are just big BMP's, and they are selected by the server in the same way as for SFC2, there is just a list of files, and every time you go into a mission it randomly picks one. I'm not sure what the size and quality of the stock SFC3 images is, but I'd like to try your mods. Post a link or something, since they probly won't fit in my email.

OK. I will do up a version that is based on material already in game. Thus will be available to the masses.  Won't get it ready till the middle of next week cause of work.
