WIP: New "Monterey" Class from the Design Lab
« on: January 29, 2003, 09:38:29 pm »
During the Dominion War, the losses that the Federation had suffered led to the re-commissiioning of many old ships. However, there were many that could not be brought online without extensive overhaul. Some of those ships were routed to the Design Lab to see if anything could be salvaged. The USS MONTEREY was completed after the war was over...however the design proved to be a worthy successor to the old Miranda and Soyuz classes. Below are some shots of the "naked" Monterey class.

This is kind of a kitbash...all parts were made by myself for other ships; I started thinking about doing a Miranda, then it slowly progressed to this creation. What do you think?

Saucer: Centaur
Weapons pods: Centaur
Nacelles: Experimental, re-scaled NOVA class

I think it's a great idea and a great design.  The only thing I would recomend is some sort of secondary hull- I dunno why, i just like it when ships have them and the navigational deflector.  But still, very cool Idea.

Those nacels really look nice on it and gives it a late TNG look. I thought the mirandas in DS9 wars looked kinda out of place for the era. Like you said they were useing anything that flew.

Hey it also looks like the nacels could double as pontoons if it had to land on an ocean in a tight spot

ONE OF THESE DAYS i SHOULD SHOW YOU THE CHIMERA FROM ONE OF THE HIGH END cgi BOARDS. (sorry, forgot I had caps on and aint retypin all that sheeat)

anyways..it's based on the idea of a more modern miranda class, except it doesn't use what is clearly an excelcior saucer like yours does, and I don't think it had a lower pod either...just more one top..lol. Let me know if u r interested in it. I got some pix around here somewhere.

Thanx James, CK I thought it looked pretty cool too. I thought about a secondary hull, but couldn't see where to attach it after I got the pods on. Unlike the Centaur, I'm going to put the shuttle bay in the rear under the impulse vents.

Starforce send 'em or post em if you find em. I'm trying to get away from the ships that have been done to death; with all the good modelers out there, my stuff looks bad compared, so I will stick to unusual ship designs.

Started doing the textures, I think they're doing good, but what do you think?

you may want to later the hull plate pattern around the pylons, otherwise you get that cruddy kind of "Stuck on pylon" look to it. Or atleast if your current texture skills allow for such a modification. Also, like on a miranda, they back edge of the pylon sticks out the rear of the saucer. IMHO, would also improve the design.

As for the chimera...I located the pix but have no way of postign them. Somehow Wsftp corrupted my login and I can't get access to the ftp and I need to bail for work right now. So...I will get back to ya on that...(note that it is a soverign/akira era design)

edit-did I make enough typo's in that post or what? I'll fix it later..lol

Yep me too: an option could be placing the navigational deflector in the lower pod.
Anyway, nice work Sandman, Miranda-style ship design is one of my favourite.

A couple more shots, showcasing the bridge/shuttlebay decks....that's all I was able to do today as my daughter has a bad double ear infection and I  was playing daddy most of the day. Needs a little tweaking, but I think it's coming along nicely. Anyway, here they are and I hope to have a little more done tonight...after the Laker game though.

Got some more done tonight after work...amazing how much fun this is when combined with Led Zeppelin. I took one of the suggestions and made the front half of the lower weapons pod a deflector dish, rear is dual photon tubes. Let me know what you think.

Nice work: i can't wait to fly it!
It only seems a little "unbalanced" the 4 aft torpedo tubes if compared to the 2 frontal: maybe the lower pod should house only the deflector.

Good point. How does this sound?: Turn the lower pod into a sort of secondary hull? It seems wrong to leave that large space empty. Maybe another shuttle bay, or maybe a small fighter bay?

Mmm... in my opinion if the lower pod becames a secondary hull, the whole ship would look like a "Excelsiorized Nebula": your original twin podded hull concept is a good and new  idea, you should stick with it. Maybe you can texturize the back of the lower pod with some windows, that can be those of the Navigational deflector control room...

The Model looks great so far and i do have one sugestion if its not already planned is to round the edges of the deflector dish kinda more oval and i like the idea of the windows on the back of the lower unit maybe a 10-backward sorta thing
