USS TITAN? What class ship is it that Riker takes command?
« on: June 03, 2003, 12:04:04 am »
Hey guys, knowing that this forum has some of the most trek knowledgeable people online.....
I've seen Nemesis a few times now and it's kinda itching me that I can't find any info concerning what ship Riker is captaining. I'm sorta of the impression he might be taking control of an Akira class. However the writers may have given him a larger ship.

Any Ideas?

In my opinion, at that time, there was a increase in production of the Akira and stuff most likely that would be it, but it would be nice if he  had a battlecrusier, ir battleship, who knows,

The novel says the Titan is supposed to be some frankenstein of several ships slapped together. Or something like that.

But novels aren't canon. Truth is we don't know what kind of ship it is. And there is every likelyhood that we never will.

Must admit that the Titan is a strange name for a Starfleet ship..

But what if it is, like it's name implies, a really BIG new class of ship? I think it would make sense then. We'll just have to wait and see... wait and see... wait and see...

I did some searching last night, I found some interesting possibilities. One was a modified Intrepid X prometheus class vesel. I'll look around for the link and post it later.

That link is not Canon.  PBEM's are fun, but there's nothing there which suggests that it is, in fact,  Rikers new commision.  In fact, while doing a search for the USS Titan I was also able to find an Achilles class USS Titan.

Anyway, although I would be totally interested to know what ship class the USS Titan really is, there's an important point to remember about whether or not the USS Titan is the next DN or BB for the Federation.  The Point: The USS Enterprise has been the flagship of the federation since the Star Trek franchise first began in 1966.  In addition, the Enterprise has in my opinion been one of the Stars of the ST Movies. This is evident not only because of the way that Kirk and Picard have characterized it, but also because of the crews' sentimentality, as well as the various panning movie shots where you can't help but admire the beauty of the ship.   Having said that,  I think the USS Titan would be an irrelevant topic in any future films.  My reason for stating that is because after watching Nemesis, I thought to myself: " Hmmm, a generation's final journey? No more Picard after Nemesis? What's the next movie? Oh, I got it! Riker and Troi aboard the USS TItan!!!" Then I remembered that the Enterprise has been the true constant of all the films.
Anyway, like everyone else here, I can only speculate. However, for the above reasons, my guess would be that we won't ever see the USS Titan unless it's just a quick image of it getting destroyed (Similar to the way we saw the Defiant in First Contact.)  For that reason,  the USS Titan could simply be a Sabre Class.  However, as any good Star Trek fan would know,  Riker has previously passed up on commanding his own vessel because he wanted to succeed Picard on the Enterprise.  Therefore, it is relatively safe to assume that Riker would only accept command of a ship with similar or better specifications than the Enterprise.  My only counter-argument vs. that would be that, since he and Troi are now married and serve together, then maybe he would accept a lesser-classed vessel which didnt put them in the same high-risks situations as the Enterprise, the flagship of the federation.

Well, I may not know what the USS Titan is, but while were one the topic of Ship Classes, lets take a look at the imagination of B&B when it came to Star Fleet Battle Group Omega

USS Intrepid NCC-74600 (Intrepid Class obviously)
USS Valiant NCC-75418 (Defiant/Valiant Class)
USS Galaxy NCC-70637 (Galaxy Class of course)
USS Aires NCC-45167 (wow, not a class name, no idea what this one is, hull number suggests possible Ambassador Class, a USS Aires was used in the NON CANON game Star Trek The Next Generation: A Final Unity, as an Ambassador)
USS Nova NCC-73515 (Nova Class duh!)
USS Hood NCC-42236 (The Hood was established in the episode Encounter at Farpoint as an Excelsior Class Starship, which would be consistant with its registry number, also the registry number shows that the ship was not destroyed in the Dominion War so therefore is still an Excelsior)
USS Archer NCC-44278 (No idea what this one is, there has never been any metion of a USS Archer before, see explanation for Enterprise,  registry number suggests either an Excelsior or an Ambassador, but could also be a Miranda or any other type of ship that was built between ST VI and Encounter at Farpoint)

Not alot of firepower there, good thing the big E didnt make it, as that Battle Group Omega would have been torn to shreads, the Nova, Intrepid (i hate to admit that one), and the Valiant would have been blown away in one salvo.  Although if the Archer and Aires were Ambassadors, between them, the Excelsior and the Galaxy, I think the E might have been able to do some real damage to the Scimitar, and prolly would have destroyed it had the Valdores crossed the Nuetral Zone.

Another note on registry numbers.  NCC-1701 is a Constitution class Starship.  NCC-2000 is an Excelsior class starship that was built approximetely 30 years later. Starfleet only built 300 ships between the Constitution and Excelsior Class Ships? Then the Galaxy is NCC-70637 so Starfleet built 68000 ships in the 100 years between the Excelsior and the Galaxy?  Or did Starfleet require ALL Federation vessels to have a registry logged with Starfleet after Kirk and Co.?
