pay attention!!- meshes to models- a tutorial available?
« on: June 06, 2003, 12:25:24 am »
Hey all- I managed to get a few meshes, one being the Romulan Kerchan I commented on in Kaeyne's thread, and a Romulan 'Battleship', plus a few wacky Federation ships. Is there a tutorial available on converting a mesh with 3DMax to a model? They both are in  a 'Scene' format, not 3Ds, so I'm lost already. Additionally, one will not even load- it says invalid format or such. Anyone care to give some pointers, or point me in a direction? They seem worth the trouble, definately.

All you need to convert ships to .mod format is the Taldren mod plugin. You can get it at the resources page at Omega Sector. Once the plugin is installed, simply export a ship to .mod format and you're done.

You might not want to bother converting hi-res ships to SFC, most computers couldn't handle them even if they were loaded up. We're talking several thousand polygons (up into the hundred thousands), not to mention the textures that come with them. This is why modelers make much lower polygon versions from scratch, usually using the hi res ones for reference.

If you're looking for the Kerchan, Anduril made a version a while back and I think it's still posted on his site. If not, I'm sure someone (KF most likely) will send you a copy.

Thnak you Wicked Zombie- I will search for that one... when i try to load that second one, it says I am missing a Viewport Manager, or a viewportmanager.gup.... what is that? It says its a Direct X .dll, and I just reinstalled Direct X a few days ago... I don't think my 3DMax is corrupted... can you emial me that file, or does that even make sense? Thanks again!

Most likely the file isn't compatible with your version of 3ds Max. Usually an older copy won't properly read a mesh/scene that was made in a newer version of Max. Unless you can find a copy that will work, or someone who can properly convert it, you're probably out of luck.
