21 gun salute

"Now entering the Taldren system, captain"

The USS Australia came out of warp and glided into the system. Even at this distance, the light of the red stellar giant at the system's centre bathed the hull in an errie red glow.

"On screen."

The vista of space was replaced by the image of the red giant, pulsating, contracting and expanding. Each contraction squeezing the stellar core just that much firther.

"How long do we have?" asked the captain.

"Sensors indicate any moment now, captain." replied the Science Officer.

"The fleet is haling us. All evacuation procedures complete. " informed the Comms Officer.

"Tactical."

The main viewing screen switched to a schematic of the system showing the stellar core and a doxen planets, several inner terrestrial bodies and some outer gas giants. Ringed around the system were hundreds and hundreds of starships, the largest gathering of beings the galaxy had ever seen.

"My God, would you look at that", gasped one of the bridge crew.

"Take her in, helsman, our position within the fleet awaits us." ordered the captain.

"Aye sir."

The USS Australia moved forward into the cloud of starships, maneuvering around and through them to take up her position. They were all herer, the Federation, the Klingons, the Romulans... every known race in the galaxy, even the Borg, yet no one was firing at each other. Not one starship had even raised shields. All were just sitting there, in space, silent, unmoving, waiting.

"it's started captain."

The stellar giant's pulsations began to become more violent. Huge chunks of stellar matter began to break off from it's surface being hurled out into space. And then it hapenned, the star exploded.

The screen flashed a blinding white, bathing the entourage of the gathered starships in the brilliance of the titanic deth rows of the super giant. An expanding plume of blue plasma fire radiated outwards from what was left of the stellar core. The inner planets, already superheated by expanding gasses were the first to meet with devestation.

"Hot Topics, its gone." murmered one of the crew.

"There goes the Scripters forum."

The onslaught of destruction continued, as each of the planets in orbit around the dying star met its doom, until finally the outer gas giants began to break up.

"The Modellers forum, the General forum, all gone."

Another brilliant flash erupted on the screen. The largest of the planets withstood the carnage longer than the rest, but finally it too succumbed to the stellar violence.

"Dynaverse Experiences II, its really gone"

Glittering in space like jewels in the heavens, the fireworks were reflecting off the hulls of the gathered starships. As the glow of the dying star began to fade, one by one, each of the starships began to power up the heavy weapons.

"Synchronise fire control with the fleet, ensign and open the universal channel."

Bagpipes began to play in the background.

"On my mark", ordered the captain.

There was a pause, a hush over the bridge crew. The captain turned to the weapons officer and nodded.

"The word is given."

The ever so gentle thud of a photon torpedo being fired could be felt through the deck plating. The screen lit up in a myriad of colours as ever starship gathered also fired their heavy weapons. A blaze of disruptors, plasma torpedoes and plasmatic pulsar devices erupted out across space, not once, not twice, but in all twenty one times.
A twenty gun salute for the loss of Taldren.

The gathering of starships sat in silence, watching, paying their last homeages for awhile, then one by one, they began to leave.

"Helmsman, lay in a course for home."

[On the bridge of the USS Repulse]

"Tactical, stand by"

"Aye sir, standing by" replied Lieutenant Sweeting.

The entire 9th Fleet had been summoned to the event- taking a few hours to warp to this star system was a small price to pay for the history surrounding it. Everyone was here- summoned by the CO of the USS Australia - Admirals Reprisal, Ken, Nannerslug and Spartan, all the Captains, Commodores and other line officers of the fleet, all assembled to witness the final salute to Taldren.

"Captain, we're receiving a signal from the fleet. Its time, sir" replied Ensign Zell at communications.

"Sweeting, are the Quantum torpedoes loaded?" the captain said

"Yes sir" he said, with heavy heart.

Then, in unison with the rest of the ships from the 9th Fleet, as well as the fleets of the Starfleet Strategic Command Fleet, the Vulcan Strike Fleet, the Starfleet BlackOps squadron,  and countless others, joined the heavy guns of the Federation Protection Fleet, in the final salute to Taldren, as the star swelled up and finally consumed all the planets in the system, in a fiery, and final, display

Over the course of the next few hours, the ships assembled for the last salute to Taldren drifted off, some back to their assignments, back to their races, back to their jobs and lives. All of the ships, except for one.

The USS Repulse remained in position, it's captain unwilling to accept the tragedy, the general feeling of loss permeating the crew.

The communications officer spoke somberly;

"Sir, we're receiving orders from Fleet Command, we are to return to duty"

The captain, though reluctant, realised that he had to say goodbye.

"Very well, ensign. Navigator, lay in a course back to our patrol station."

When the ship began to move away, the Captain, sensing something, moved over to the Science Station. Studying the readout, a small smile played on his face.

"It looks like we're not the last ship here, after all"

The sensor display showed one small vessel, near the sun, still in the system. One lifesign was aboard.

"It looks like Dave Ferrell's life signs on board, sir"

Moving over to the front rail of the bridge, Ryker watched as the Repulse left the system.

"Though yet of Taldren, our dear friend's loss the memory be green, and that it us befitted to bear our hearts in grief, and our whole kingdom to be contracted in one brow of woe, yet so far hath discretion fought with nature, that we with wisest sorrow think on him, together with remembrance of ourselves."

"Was that a poem, Captain", Sweeting asked.

"Hamlet, ensign, Act 1 Scene 2."

"Sir?"

"Just something that came to mind", said Ryker A small smile broke out on his face, as he remembered good times past at Taldren, and thought of the bright, enduring future of the Dynaverse beyond...

"Helm, belay that last course change"

"Aye sir. New course?"

"Second star to the right, and straight on till morning"

Would it be too cheesey to re-visit this post when we can fire Webs, Shield Crackers, and DisDevs?

I think that would be a fitting tribute. The Dream didn't die, does that make sense? The spirit of Taldren is still alive?

A lot of time ago, and some universes away, a great game by the title of Freespace 2 suffered the same fate. Taldren was able to keep itself together long enough for us to enjoy what we continue to do, the best sci-fi tactical starship simulator. If that isn't a fitting ending to the saga of Taldren I don't know what is...

However, it feels like... " I have no mouth and I must scream!"

So, people a question. Who is organising the addition/admition of new races... of old back to their home?

I suggest an organisation, Led by Firesoul and crewed by those who know their C++, that the beta testers should be eligible for getting on first, to be called...

"Code command"

May our new home honor the old one.

I, Mudd.

We can already fire TR beams...

(onboard the A.I.F. Cathar)

"Commander, the Galactics are in position. TR banks are charged and ready, and the sound clip is cued on the U.S.S. Australia."

"Very well, target the Memorialized SatShip and prepare for displacement."

The bagpipes sounded througout the bridge of the A.I.F. Cathar, summing up the feelings of all present, from all ships...expressing the loss all felt in ways they would never let themselves express otherwise. An historic moment, to say the least.

"Commander, reports coming in...Stasis fields, PA panels, Web casters, Shield crackers...even our own Displacement Device! They are all off-line! Even the Galactics are reporting malfuctions...Plasma bolts are non-responsive, Fast-loading Photon Torpeodes...the list goes on! What happened?" the communications officer was genuinely shaken.

The Science officer broke the tension. "U.S.S. Australia firing first salvo sir."

"Very well-Fire all TR banks when we are called--and try to get that DisDev online!" The commander could not understand how this could be happening, the DisDev's had worked for so long...why were they failing now? Why now of all times?

"I can't sir! It's as if the system was never there!" the engineer replied

"Concurring reports coming in from the other ships Captain."

The Cathar was called, and delivered every TR beam it could muster. It was an awe-inspiring sight...seeing all the heavy weapons brought to bear to memorialize the fallen comrades. There wasn't a dry eye in the fleet.

"Captain, incoming message from the U.S.S. Austrailia...inquiring about lack of Memorial SatShip...similar questions to the Tholians, Seltorians, and the like...Replies are identical, system completely missing...same coming from all races about the lack of weapon fire options..."

"Send message U.S.S. Australia: Displacement Device missing, PA Panels offline, request permission to disembark to assertain cause of malfunction."

"Captain responding...request granted. Orders given to other races to do same. Reports that she will head investigation in her malfunction."

"Allright then. Set a course for the nearest Andromedan Base.

"We've got work to do."

I hope this doesn't sound too corney, I just wanted to contribute my part and give a little hope for the future...because this is not the end of an era...it's the start of a new one.

TracyG, you have shown your quality. Only the very highest. I look forward to reading your future posts.

The SSCF Rider in White silently glided into position along with the Integrity, China Doll, Frontier and many of the other SSCF ships.

"All ships remain at station"

"Captain Rolling...execute missing ship formation"

Slowly the ship began its' maneuver as it drifted up and out of formation, leaving a yawning hole in the array of ships.

"Sir, where will we go now? The true home world is gone..."

Hooch looked at the empty space that once was the planet of all their beginnings, a sadness? crept over him

"Yes it is gone yeoman, but the giants the walked there still live on "out there" they still know what they began and I just know we have not heard the last of them. They are only sleeping, taking a rest from their labors. They have left us here to keep their dreams alive until they re-awaken and begin to stir and come to walk among us again. We will not let their dream die, or slowly fade away into the past."

Hooch's voice fell silent

"Helm, signal the fleet to lay in course for star base Dynaverse...best speed"

"Communications deploy space buoy "Remember"

"Aye sir...buoy away"

?Engage warp drive helm?

?Warp drive active sir?coming about?

Slowly, almost reverently each ship winked into warp drive and disappeared, lastly the Rider in White flashed into warp and vanished from the beginnings of all things SFC.

The lonely buoy began transmitting its? message in the cold emptiness of space

?To those that enter this space:

Know this, once this space held the dreams and hopes of a great space faring race know as Taldrenites. They were as giants among ants. The space you are in is holy ground to us and we will defend it to the end. Treat this place accordingly or face the consequences of the entire Alpha Quadrant.?

The message was broadcast in Federation, Klingon, Kinzi, Lyran, Hydran, ISC, and Romulan. The voice was that of a large polar Kat called Jinn.

(oddly at the end one could faintly hear a snicker say ?that will be five bucks please?

anyone know if the taldren.com domain is for sale? I think it would be neat if it could be kept as a rememberance site.

Wow! I just can't freaking believe the Taldren Forum is gone.  After all these years I don't know what I'm going to do with all the time I spent on the forum.   Well I suppose I'll spend some of that here.  No more being moderator so I'll find myself with more time on my hands.

Thanks for providing this site guys.

Still sad.

I was told to get on this train and it will take me to where I belong... but I'm afraid of this train.  Everyone on here looks different and scared.

Why can't I go home?  Why were we cast out into the darkness... the cold.

Will there be light at the end of the tunnel?

I'm thankful for this place, I just don't belong here.

I just want to go home.

To paraphrase Shakespeare, also from Hamlet,

Taldren was a company, taken all in all, we shall not see its like again.

I wish everyone who has worked for Taldren well and thank them for all they brought us.  Thank you seems insufficient, yet thanks are offered.

As for those who besmirch the sentiment of this topic, so eloquently expressed by TraceyG, watch it.

Many of us have a love for the SFC series.  We will always have a warm spot in our hearts for Taldren and the people from there who brought us a series of games we just love, as well.

Some people like to be criticial about everything.  Life is too short for that.

Sigh... You will be missed Taldren.

Now if it isn't in bad taste...

Anyone find it interesting that after Nanner fires his 21 photon salute into the void of space that somehow 5 of them still hit a klink?

Even when I was cloaked....hehe

I would like to add this....if I may be so bold....

Having lost people who meant alot to me...I share this (I think it aplies here as well)

No one ever really dies....what makes you YOU is more than mere atoms and electrons......whatever your beliefs...the majority believe that your life force passes on....

So in reflection.....Taldren lives on....in us....the spirt...the game....and the love of the game...will continue...

As long as at least two of us have connections and PC's that will run SFC.....Taldren lives on...

The game existed BEFORE taldren....During taldren...and now...After Taldren....

We pay tribute as long as we care...both about the game..AND each other...

I am sorry to see Taldren has left this world. Perhaps in the mirror universe Taldren is working on SFC8 or 9.

We need to send an agent over there and steal SFC4. I hope they got it right! LOL

The news reached the remote planet after the event, but still in time to be viewed from a large telescope as it was so far away.  When the light finally reached him, he watched silently, remembering the early days and being chosen to serve.  To test and shakedown, then to take those early ships to task in an ever changing universe.  Thru 4 ages he remembered the friends, the conflicts, the adversaries.

Even though he was far from the core, there was some satisfaction in knowing that it was all operating without him.  Now that feeling is gone.

When the sun finally blinked out of existance, SFCspoonman wiped his eyes, silently said a few solenm words to himself and walked to his shuttle...

"The homeworld may be gone, but there are colonies out there that are carrying on the tradition",he thought, "and I have been too far away."

He fired up his engines and headed for the nearest colony...
